If you missed it, yesterday’s shattering news in the movie industry is that Guillermo del Toro has left as director of The Hobbit. Oh boy. I was happy beyond measure when del Toro was named the director of the film. I felt like he was the right choice. However, studio blunderings and corporate red tape has frustrated the director and he’s out.
The question now is: Who’s in?
I’m going to make my list more brief and only include names of directors I would really like to see take the project, or at least that I think would bring an interesting dynamic.
* Jean-Pierre Jeunet – (Ameile, The City of Lost Children) JPJ is one of the most visually interesting directors alive. He handles themes both subtle and story-centric with a deft hand and will always provide a unique vision.
* Julie Taymor – (Across the Universe, Titus) Surprised? Taymor has a brilliant sense of drama and style. Although her resume is limited, I have the believe the amazing vision on display in Titus should put the director on the map for The Hobbit. It’s a completely different style of music than what she is known for, but then again have you seen Meet the Feebles?
* Danny Boyle – (Sunshine, 28 Days Later) – A true cross-genre auteur, Boyle could easily accomplish episodic drama, humor, and complex themes. Sunshine is his one movie that points to a sense of visual style that could compliment The Hobbit.
