Given the political climate, it’s a wonder that “Creation” was greenlit. It is after all the story of how Charles Darwin came to write “On The Origin of the Species,” which, alongside Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, marks one of mankinds’ greatest leaps forward in understanding who we are and where we came from.
Sadly, there are still a sizable number of often loud people who believe the earth was created in seven days, that humans walked with dinosaurs, and the fact that we descended from apes is just poppycock. There is at least one state where creationism -- that’s you Kansas -- must be taught as a legitimate theory along side evolution.
(Presumably, even fundamentalists now concede that Galileo was correct: the earth revolves around the sun; not vice versa.)
But beyond that it received a go-ahead, it is surprising that a film so imaginatively produced, so well written, so excellently acted, didn’t do better. Or perhaps these two situations are related. Can you do well even if you don’t play in Kansas?
