“Timer” is one of those rare head-scratching movies. Watch it and you will be (as I was) puzzled by how so smartly written and acted a film did not take off during its theatrical release.
On the surface, it is just another predictable romantic comedy, where you know who will wind up with whom from the get-go -- until it isn’t and it doesn’t. Until it makes an entirely unexpected u-turn and you’re left with the realization that there really is a lot going on here. The story is set in the near future. Someone has invented an implantable device that tells you exactly how much time is left before you meet your one true love -- but there’s a catch. If your True Love doesn’t have a Timer chip, yours remains blank.
Most people have come to rely on the implants in lieu of feelings and that is at the heart of the plot.
