Oil and gas companies are going to start hydro-fracking operations to drill for gas in NY this year if the state's Dept of Environmental Conservation (DEC) approves the permits.
The DEC needs to do the right thing: wait until the Environmental Protection Agency finishes a national study on the environmental impact of hydro-fracking in the next year or two.
Hydro-fracking, despite polluting the groundwater in many documented cases across the US, isn't currently regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. This loophole is unacceptable -- and corrupt. It's known as the "Halliburton Loophole" because Dick Cheney (former Vice President and former CEO of Halliburton) requested the inclusion of the provision in the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
"The Energy Policy Act of 2005 exempted hydraulic fracturing from federal regulation under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Reports of ground water contamination have questioned whether the exemption is appropriate. A complete listing of the specific chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing operations are not currently made available to landowners, neighbors, local officials, or health care providers." "The FRAC Act, introduced in June 2009, would eliminate the exemption and would require the disclosure of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing." (wikipedia)
Why are companies being allowed to push ahead with this dirty, dangerous form of drilling? If it's as safe as the corporations say it is, then why can't they wait for confirmation from the EPA?
Check out and support a group, called Frack Action, that has formed to oppose hydro-fracking and urge its regulation! Their website is really great:

the world today has become very detached from the physical world, with techniques of production and distribution that have no relationship to the environment. Our use of a profit based, “growth” driven monetary system has become one of the greatest destroyers of the natural world and sustainable human values. Even with our current, destructive methods, the Earth is still abundant with resources. Today our practice of rationing resources through monetary methods is irrelevant and counter-productive to the well-being of people. Today’s society has access to highly advanced technologies and can easily provide more than enough for a very high standard of living for all the earth’s people.....why is this not happening. our world is currently run, undeniably, by a small group of dominant men in high positions of those institutions which are most dominant in society- Business and Finance. you think they are just gonna step down. Once technology started to get better they had to be looking around like "shit one man can be in charge of 1600 acres of land so shouldnt the price go down now?" of course not money is still what this planet is all about....

Excerpt:
"Josh Fox was a guest on The Daily Show Monday night, coinciding with the HBO release of his new documentary, Gasland. He talks with Jon Stewart about the film, which exposes the toxic chemicals being leeched into water supplies as a consequence of the new natural gas drilling method sweeping the nation, hydraulic fracturing. Some water supplies are so drastically affected by the chemicals that residents are actually able to light their tap water on fire." - 1 year ago

This is insane. Of course the gas companies argue is that this is naturally occurring. Even on the news this morning they (the gas company) barely let the film maker speak his argument and what he has found. Well let the images do the talking.

Yesterday, activists in Buffalo, NY met at the Dept of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to demonstrate against hydro-fracking and to send a message to the Dept that New Yorkers do not want to trade clean water for dirty gas. See the activists' new website: www.frackaction.com
Protest made the news, see VIDEO: http://buffalo.ynn.com/content/top_stories/508121/activists-concerned-about-wate...
Hydro-fracking needs to be regulated by the Safe Water Drinking Act and the EPA, and until it is, those corporate plunders can piss off!
The DEC has the power to stop hydro-fracking in NY. Activists, organizers, residents, students, farmers, land-owners, and everyone whose watersheds are going to be affected gotta keep the pressure on!
Also -- I just read that the film GASLAND is showing on HBO on June 21st.

My question is why haven't we moved to solar power, wind power, geothermal energy, etc.
I'm sorry if I offend any one but our government is full of retards that want to do what they want to do only to stuff their already full pockets with more wads of cash. - 1 year ago

They say that the technology aint there. Solar panels are expensive and they need to be replaced eventually. Wind power is only for some areas and geothermal . . . .No clue 'bout that.

Because it will be cheap and self-sustainable, thus not as profitable or not profitable at all if people start buying them to run their homes. The same reason why they killed the electric car.

What do you mean the technology ain't there? Earth to Carlos, they have skyscrapers that have solar panels instead of windows, wind power is obviously not for the whole country but it would be an improvement, and instead of drilling holes for oil why not drill them geothermal energy (Heat from within the earth). Didn't in the old days when we had no electricity make wheels powered by the current of water, what about the steam engine? We live in a world of corrupt and selfish politics, we are killing Mother Earth because of a few people who think they can show up to the office with suit and tie and boss everyone around and decide for "you" what you can and cannot do, what "you" can and cannot say, shall I go on...

And that is exactly what I am talking about a bunch of idiots who think they dont have enough money for another car, another house, nicer things, what about the people who really need it? they are selfish, corrupt, greedy, whatever, if 2012 does come I hope the only survivors are people who deserve the chance for a better life, and all those greedy corrupt politicians or whoever thinks they are Mr. badass of the year prick punks fall down holes like the one in Guatemala!
