Zombieland 2 to be in 3D

Zombieland was one of the most talked about films of last year. It was incredibly well-received amongst horror fans and movie critics alike. It even managed to receive a glowing review from me and made my top ten of last year. Even though the film only managed to bring in $75 million during its box office run, the original film contains enough ingredients to push it into cult classic status. So it should come to no surprise that a sequel may be on the horizon.

A sequel has been boiling ever since Zombieland brought in $25 million at the box office its opening weekend. Paul Wernick, one of the screenwriters for the film told MTV News:

"We would love it, and everyone involved creatively wants to do another one. Woody came up to us after the final cut of the last scene and gave us a hug and said, 'I've never wanted to do a sequel in the previous movies I've done until this one.' "

Actors Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg, screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, producer Gavin Polone, and director Ruben Fleischer would all be willing to return if and when a sequel was greenlit. Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin haven't been confirmed yet, but one would assume that talks would at least take place to try and get them back.

"It has lived in our heads for four-and-a-half years," Wernick said. "We developed it and wrote it as a spec TV pilot in the summer of 2005. We've got a long brainstorming document that still to this day gets updated on a near-weekly basis with ideas. We've got tons of new ideas swimming in our head."

It was later confirmed at the end of November of last year that Sony Pictures is interested in a 3D Zombieland sequel, but that it was still in the "talking stages" and that a script was yet to be written.

In January of 2010, Wernick and Reese officially signed on to write the sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. In addition to that, the two screenwriters have signed on to write the Deadpool film as well. Ryan Reynolds played Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, who eventually became Deadpool. Reynolds is expected to return for the solo Deadpool film. Wernick and Reese are also working on a sci-fi film called Earth Vs Moon that they hope Will Smith will star in and they at least wrote a draft for the Venom film, based on the Spider-Man villain.

In February, Wernick and Reese sat down with MTV News to talk about Zombieland 2. They discuss ideas for the sequel, a love interest for Tallahassee, and if we can expect any new characters to show up. You can check out that video below.

So it looks like we'll be getting a Zombieland 2 in 3D in a few years. It looks like Deadpool is getting Paul Wernick's and Rhett Reese's attention first, but it's still good to know that a sequel is at least planned at this point. The real question is if they can top the cameo they had in the first film. That was an unexpectedly great surprise, so I'm hoping they can think of another cameo that's just as entertaining as the one in the first film. If this much of the original cast is returning, then there's really no reason for this film to not be good. Coincidentally though, IMDb lists a 2011 release date for Zombieland 2.
