Mr. Seeger advocated for deep geothermal energy yesterday. Deep geothermal uses precisely the same technologies used in natural gas development:
• A large diameter borehole (much larger than boreholes for natural gas development) is drilled 12,000 – 40,000 feet deep
• Protective casing is cemented in place
• Fracturing fluid (water, sand and additives) is pumped at very high pressure to create fractures in the target formation so that heat exchange can take place
It is surprising that some environmentalists champion this technology when it is applied to deep geothermal power, but demonize the same technology when applied to the shallower natural gas bearing shales.

After watching the HBO documentary "Gasland," and spending some time on the Western Slope of the Colorado Rockies, it really concerns me as to whether the oil and gas industry even bothers to look at matters past their own bottom line. I mean, if the BP oil disaster has taught me anything, is that these companies aren't prepared to deal with the environmental consequences in the event of an emergency.
