Iggy Pop On His Upcoming Cameo in Vampire Film Suck

OK, so Vampires Suck seems to have resonated with those tired with Twilight -- but that's not the only vampire film coming out with a title like that. There's also a little-known Canadian flick called Suck coming out on DVD this fall, featuring cameos by Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Moby, and Henry Rollins. Here's what Iggy had to say about his part:

Q: Who do you play? Are you a vampire?

A: I'm just a guy, a local hero, who's been through it all, but still has some issues. An older musician with issues. The interesting thing about it is that it was a conversational and a human role. I get a lot of things where people ask me to leap electric fences, and rape junebugs. Crazy, whatever, and that’s not going to help. My character, he’s a regular guy, and I tell them, in the story, I’m the first to recognize the vampires, because I’ve been around. I just know by looking at them. How people look and what they do, you learn shorthand after a while to size people up.

Q: How much was involved? How long were you set? Did you get to improv any?

A: I was in and out of that set for two days. My part was scripted and I threw in some lines, “When you get famous, the same cops who busted you before will want your autograph.” They were happy with that. I like being in the movies, but if I were sincerely after being in the movies, I’d be in LA right now. I’m not that sincere.

Q: What about doing more film scores?

A: I wish somebody would give me a film to score. The best thing that ever happened to me along those lines was when Alex Cox was making Repo Man, and I was down and out, and he came to this little hovel I was living in and he said, “Write me a theme.” That was good. I had a pretty good experience doing film music for Johnny Depp, when he directed The Brave. It’s almost better if it’s an assignment, is what I’m saying at this point. I need that. It could be as simple as someone hiring us to do a song that gave advice to bad kids, you know? Like “My Advice, F--k You" could be the song.
