“Prince of Broadway” is a very small film, even by indie standards. Director Sean Baker, presumably out of financial necessity, used largely non-professional actors with limited range. The story is tiny, whatever the opposite of universal is. And the cinematography and sound are largely uneven.
Yet the film is compelling, and it is easy to see why it attracted the attention of Lee Daniels -- it’s officially “Lee Daniels Presents the Prince of Broadway” -- the award winning producer/director of “Precious.” It is centered in the same milieu as his film, an underclass environment most folks are rarely exposed to.
