From the naturalistic soul-searching of John Sayles’ “The Return of the Secaucus Seven” to the glossy bonhomie of “Friends,” it’s a pretty stock formula to throw together a pack of affectionate and bickering guys and dolls and observe the intra-group dynamics play out.
One of the most successful goes at this format, “The Big Chill,” brought together its characters to mourn the death of a comrade. “The Romantics” uses a wedding as the impetus for a reunion gathering. Sadly, it does not prove an especially joyous occasion for either participants or viewers.
