James Cameron has been talking about a return to Pandora for months, but now there’s an official target date: The sequel to ”Avatar” is due in theaters in December 2014, and a third film in the series will follow 12 months after that.

“Avatar” pulled in more than $2.7 billion at theaters worldwide and has broken records in home video as well. The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including best picture and best director, and it won Golden Globes those categories as well. Jon Landau, who produced “Titanic” and “Avatar,” will return to produce the new films with Cameron, and the pair said a few weeks ago they were adamant about sticking with their lucky December release dates as opposed to moving to the summer.
