The Good Fight - The Abraham Lincoln Brigades: A Lesson From History

jubal
With the recent swing of the political pendulum to the right in this country, one cannot help but recognize that Americans have a very short memory when it comes to history. How quickly people have forgotten who put us where we are today...they blame Obama and the Democrats but the reality is that the Republican Federalist Neocons are responsible for the extremely tough economic times that we are now facing.

History is like a merry-go-round and this film demonstrates just how circular it really is.

Anyone who hates fascism and who loves democracy and freedom will cherish this documentary and will recognize the parallels that existed in the Spanish Civil War and our current polarization in this country between the Right and the Left.

It seems that we have come full circle once again where freedom and liberty are considered communist and socialist, and democracy is seen as a demon that would allow gays to marry, women to have abortions, and morality of the nation to be in decline. Once again we witness how the church is the whore of the government as it meddles in civil life and attempts to dictate morality on its terms and not on the evolved conscience of the human spirit.

This documentary, even though it is a historical document, foreshadows the path down which out country is headed.

The good news is that it lays out strategies and offers lessons to be learned so that we do not make the same mistakes again.

In the words of Bill Bailey "One day we may live in a descent society where there is no such thing as a bomb or a gun, where it would be a criminal offense to allow someone to go hungry. That's the type of society we want. So therefore we've got to keep going. To give up now would be the worst form of cowardice that I could think of."

Abe Osherhoff characterizes the brigades as having fought the Good Fight, however he cautions..."The whole thing is a huge metaphor for the human condition. Is it possible to fight the good fight? You can't really answer that question, but it raises it very sharply! It was a good fight, THE GOOD FIGHT...but we lost."

    • In the words of Bill Baily, I believe, "...they had a moment in history when they could have done something about it and they missed the ball..."

The irony is, that the same power brokers who ran the show back then are still running the show today...many corporations and wealthy elite were so far invested in the war machine of the nazis and the facists that it behoved them to allow the war to rage in the honor of the despots...the more the resistance fought, the more munitions and supplies were needed to defeat them and the more money to be made by the thriving surreptitious war machine...the loss of the lower class lives seems to be the last thing on the minds of the greedy elite. Where diplomacy and creative compromising and bargaining could go a long way toward solving the problems of global society, instead the bully 'kick their ass' tactics are still employed...

When will the collective mind of mankind come to realize that we can control our own destiny in this present moment by being conciously aware of what is going on around us and taking action to improve our condition...

Consider whether a big part of the problem is, that most people selectively hear what they want to hear and believe the lies that are professed to be truth from those who they believe are looking after their best interests, but instead are herding them into the sea of blind consumption, where so many are drowning in their own passivism...whether conservative or so called 'liberal'... what many people don't realize is, that the progressive movement has it roots in both republican and democrat circles, searching for the middle of the road, perhaps.

Thanks, jubal, for sharing this post; what a tremendously powerful documentary. Those individuals, who went to fight for the Spanish people are truly great heroes...

I'll agree with that. I am a capitalist. I believe in the American dream, if you have the right idea at the right time, and you are willing to put some work into it, you can be as rich as your wildest dreams. You can be free to do what you want to do in America, and you do not have to worry about what the state wants you do to or tells you to do. That is why our country is the greatest on Earth. I am very happy to have found out last Tuesday night that I am not the only one who feels this way.

There are many who believe that Communism works for them, i.e., the Chinese...due to a population that has been out of control for many decades, but the crimes against humanity, perpetrated by the Chinese government toward their people and the Tibetan monks are an unforgivable betrayal of their public trust...but then look at what The American government has done in so many other countries... regardless, I don't believe that Communism would have, could have or ever will get a foothold in America...No Americans would put up with being ordered about...

    • This film represents a time when Americans generally really did care about freedom and democracy, when we didn't automatically associate democracy with communism.

    • Ashes of Spanish Civil War Vet Brought to Spain

And family and friends of the late Clarence Kailin have brought his ashes to Spain, where he fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s. Kailin died last year at the age of 95 in Madison, Wisconsin. He was one of the last survivors of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, a group of American volunteers who fought in defense of Spain’s democratically elected government against a military coup led by Gen. Francisco Franco, backed by Adolf Hitler and Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. (From the DN archives: 'Fighting Fascism: The Americans–Women and Men–Who Fought In the Spanish Civil War')

    • On all sides of political debates, attractive liars have historically whipped up emotion in the young in order to induce them to commit suicide in war. Lately the struggle between common workers and corporate fascists has been intensified because right wringers smell victory over labor unions, social justice, and hope. However, it would be a mistake to urge anyone to sacrifice himself in the cause against oligarchy, because true victory will not come on a battlefield. Victory against those who worship materialism will come when common people refuse to join the ranks of avid consumers who suck at the teat of mass production. Sooner or later, when the common people have been bankrupted, the corporate fascist state will collapse as the economic system that supports it fails.

    • Thank you Jubal. I would have been enlisted. I am raising my child and waiting for a right action movement to take hold. Justice must be served to raise consciousness.

Governments use religion as a tool among many to manufacture consent of the governed, perverting and twisting minds that would not otherwise be twisted to the will of the gluttonous and powerful.
