Racists Totally Freak Out Over Idris Elba Playing Norse God in 'Thor'

The Council of Conservative Citizens is upset that London-born Idris Elba, star of The Wire and BBC detective series Luther as well as a number of Hollywood films, is to play deity Heimdall in the Marvel Studios feature. The group, which opposes inter-racial marriage and gay rights, has set up a website, boycott-thor.com to set out its opposition to what it sees as an example of leftwing social engineering.
"It [is] well known that Marvel is a company that advocates for leftwing ideologies and causes," the site reads. "Marvel frontman Stan 'Lee' Lieber boasts of being a major financier of leftwing political candidates. Marvel has viciously attacked the Tea Party movement, conservatives and European heritage.
"Now they have taken it one further, casting a black man as a Norse deity in their new movie Thor. Marvel has now inserted social engineering into European mythology."
The site chooses to ignore its target's thespian talents, referring to "hip-hop DJ Elba" in apparent reference to the actor's career in East End nightclubs more than a decade ago. Elba himself addressed the casting issue earlier this year, pointing out that "Thor has a hammer that flies to him when he clicks his fingers". He continued: "That's OK, but the colour of my skin is wrong?"
Branagh's decision to cast non-white actors as citizens of Asgard stands in apparent opposition to a one-time policy on Peter Jackson's forthcoming Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit. A British woman of Pakistani origin complained last month that she had been turned away from a casting session for being "too brown". The offending crew member, an independent contractor, was later sacked.
Thor, starring the Anglo-Saxon-looking Chris Hemsworth in the title role, and Jewish actor Natalie Portman as his love interest is due to arrive in cinemas next May.

Damn! When the history of film never showed that Jesus is a black man in Africa, it becomes the same "Jim Crow" law of thumb that a black man should never makes it past the credits, unless he's comedic relief or he finances his own story. Since the Caucasoid film industry has never shines a heroic light on black history, I think it's karmetic debt that Thor be black. Hell, I'm still waiting on Luke Cage and Iron Fist to hit the screen. Tha't's more in tune with establishing positive race relations in the film industry as a whole.

Hollywood also kept us from knowing the roll that black cowboys played in the American West. Until relatively recently a black man was never seen in a western movie unless he was in a roll such as a porter or stable boy. Fully 25% of the western cowboys in the late 19th century were freed slaves and among the top hands of the frontier.

And I was born just after. Still, at my relatively advanced age, I don't consider 36 years as being recent, not even relatively so. I agree, in the old Westerns, there were no prominent roles for blacks, and most of the Indians were played by Russians (who are for the most part remarkable horsemen), and most of the speech of Indians in calvacades in those old Western movies were Russian swearwords, because few Native Americans got roles in those films either.

As I love Norse Mythology, I always disliked the comic book. Watered down and inaccurate, so no surprise (or care) with this choice. They are doing the same to the myths as Shrek did to Mother Goose, modern distortion to fit vogue political beliefs. http://www.answers.com/topic/heimdall-1

not for nothing but the movie is based on a comic based on a mythology and in both heimdell was a fat white dude with a red beard, and its kinda dumb to cast him this way. imagine the furor (no pun intended) if they made a black panther movie and cast a white guy as t'challa

Whats great is that Elba play the God Heimdall the Gatekeeper of Asgard in Marvel Mythology. One step farther is that Heimdall means "white god" so props to Marvel for the casting. just to troll a bit - Superman is a Jew and the first Captain America was a black man.

Ah, I found the etymology of that name at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heimdall
The etymology of the name Heimdallr is unclear. Grimm in his Teutonic Mythology (12.1) compares the heim element to himinn "sky, heavens" and the þallr element to þöll (genitive þallar) "pine-tree".[2] The same noun þöll appears also in the sense of "river" in Sn. 43, and Freyja bears the epithet Mardöll (genitive Mardallar, Sn. 37, 154). The original motivation for the name remains unknown, and there is no parallel material from other Germanic languages.

According to Wikipedia; "Heimdall (Old Norse Heimdallr, modern Icelandic Heimdallur) is one of the æsir (gods) in Norse mythology, in the Edda called the "white god" (hvíta ás)." It would probably be more correct to say that "Heimdall was the white god", rather than, "Heimdall means the white god."

Thor comes from Asgard.
The primary sources regarding Asgard come from the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Icelandic Snorri Sturluson, and the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from a basis of much older Skaldic poetry.
The Prose Edda presents two views regarding Asgard.
In the "Prologue" Snorri offers an euhemerized and Christian-influenced interpretation of the myths and tales of his forefathers. As-gard, he conjectures, is the home of the Æsir (singular Ás) in As-ia, making a folk etymological connection between the three "As-"; that is, the Æsir were "men of Asia", not gods, who moved from Asia to the north and some of which intermarried with the peoples already there. Snorri's interpretation of the 13th century foreshadows 20th century views of Indo-European migration from the east.
Snorri further writes that Asgard is a land more fertile than any other, blessed also with a great abundance of gold and jewels. Correspondingly, the Æsir excelled beyond all other people in strength, beauty and talent.
Snorri proposes the location of Asgard as Troy, the center of the earth. About it were 12 kingdoms and 12 chiefs. One of them, Múnón, married Priam's daughter, Tróán, and had by her a son, Trór, to be pronounced Thor in Old Norse. The latter was raised in Thrace.
***************
Note that Asians are not usually white-skinned with blond hair and blue eyes, and that neither are the Thracians. This said, you people should have read the whole article as posted above, and note the LAST sentence, the first part of which reads: "Thor, starring the Anglo-Saxon-looking Chris Hemsworth in the title role" - Anglo-Saxon-looking. Since when do Anglo-Saxons look African?

Snori's theorising was just plain silly. His main purpose was to remove their divinity in order to further the goals of Christianity, this has always been widely aknowledged. This is why he's not the only source we go to for the mythology. The other is Saxo Grammaticus.
But all that asside. What you should be learning about here is the lore of the comics themselves which is all that matters in this case and that perfectly justifies this casting choice without having to torture the old mythology.

Why the heck not? Although there is a larger proportion of blonds in the Scandinavian population than in the southern European population, there are a great many dark-haired and even frizzy-haired Scandinavians, as well as dark-skinned ones. Before I moved to Sweden, I was looking forward to no longer be among the tallest and among the darker-skinned, brown-eyed and brown-haired population. Well, to my disappointment, I was still among the tallest, and my skin was no darker than most, and my brown eyes were still among the most widespread. People who have never lived in Scandinavia have erroneous preconceptions. Who is Papa Legba?

Thor is a God revered by the Norse of yore, but that doesn't make him white or blond. Have you ever been to Scandinavia? Admittedly, more people are blond and blue-eyed there than elsewhere, but there are many dark-skinned people there too, who were there before the arrival of the whites.

The indigenous people of Norway, Sweden and Finland are the dark-skinned Sami - they were there before the Vikings, and the Vikings adopted many of the Sami's beliefs. The Sami have dark skin (it has been somewhat diluted through interbreeding with the Vikings), black hair and eyes. Here is a photo of a couple of Sami girls in Norway.

Actually I think I would be little upset myself if Thor himself were played by a black guy. I mean it just doesn't fit. You wouldn't cast a white guy as Shaka, king of the Zulu. So I guess I'm not surprised that white supremacists would be even more upset. I think you also have to understand that a lot of white prisoners have taken up the Norse mythology as their religion --in juxposition to many black prisoners who have become Muslim. And we all know how much racial tension there is in prisons. So this has some incarceration and religious overtones as well.

From what I know of the Mavel comic Thor thing, the whole set-up is that these are gods RE-born into the bodies of already living humans.
i.e they are not literally THE gods.
so having Hiemdal as a black man really makes perfect sense, it just further goes to illustrate the whole re-born thing.Anyway, Thor was never a buff blonde haired clean shaven guy, he was meant to be a great big beefy bull of a figure red haired brute with a big red beard. This is a story based on a comic book series, not the prose Eddas.

I don't have any problem with a black man playing a Norse god just as I didn't have a problem with Michael Clarke Duncan playing Kingpin in Daredevil (The Kingpin in the comics was white).
Agree with it or disagree with it, there is a certain eurocentric revival growing and I could see where this would be particularly offensive to this group of people. It's a silly thing to obsess over though.
I also agree with the statement about Marvel Comics being used for social engineering to a certain extent.

Do you know the truth or are you satisfied with just what you've chosen to accept from what you envision ? Did you have a problem with the roles that Charlton Heston and Yule Brenner played in the 10 Commandments ? If you didn't, you should have no problem whatsoever with this role.
