Shot in the spring of 1963, "Take This Hammer" records James Baldwin's reflections on race in America while he tours San Francisco and includes conversations he had with residents in the Bayview-Hunters Point and Fillmore Districts. The film ending--Baldwin's jujitsu-like handling of the word "nigger"--contains a practical kind of wisdom that is still valuable today.
