Despite its abundance of derivative elements and an unabashed surrender to mawkishness at the finale, “Super 8” is pretty unbeatable summer fare. Written and directed by J.J. Abrams, who channels the youthful zest of early Spielberg -- a co-producer on the project -- this original work has a far more assured touch than was evident on the “Lost” creator’s efforts at the Star Trek reboot or M:I:3.
