... Or is Sarah Palin's 15 minutes FINALLY up? Please!
How funny and ironic and Karmic is it that Sarah Palin's bomb, "The Undefeated" grossed a MEASLY $65,000 during its opening weekend the same weekend that the final Harry Potter movie (very good, BTW) grossed $168 MILLION. That is (pull out your calculators) 2,584 times more!
In a weird way, Harry Potter and Sarah Palin are joined at the hip. When Sarah Palin became Mayor of Wasilla, one of the absolute first things she did after taking office was ask the city librarian how to go about removing books from the city library. In essence, Sarah was out to ban books. The librarian stood up for herself, was fired by Sarah for "not supporting her mayor," then quickly reinstated after public pressure.
When Sarah was running for vice president the story came out. Part of that story was that Sarah Palin tried to ban Harry Potter from the city library. I made plenty of jokes all week about the irony of this, now that Harry Potter STEAMROLLED Sarah's dumb movie.
But, I did some research and found out this is apparently an Internet-driven urban legend. Apparently, a list got circulated with all the books Sarah wanted banned. On that list were several Potter books, To Kill a Mockingbird and Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice were also on it. It turns out the first Harry Potter book came out a few months after Sarah took office. And it turns out there is no specific list anyone knows of that Sarah wanted to ban; all she apparently did was ask how she could go about getting some books banned, and then try to fire the librarian when she didn't go along with it.
This list is something put together of books that right-wing religious fanatics commonly attempt to ban. I don't believe Sarah Palin tried to ban To Kill A Mockingbird or Twelfth Night, because frankly, she is so dense and uneducated, I doubt she has even heard of these works or knows anything about them.
I think the larger point is, Sarah and her ilk (and Michele Bachmann fits into this group even more than Sarah) do go around looking to ban books -- and Harry Potter has been one of the top targets for years for right-wing religious nuts like Palin and Bachmann. So, I think it's fair to join Potter and Palin at the hip.
And it's fair to take pleasure in watching good ol' Harry wax Sarah at the box office.
I think Sarah's star has been taken over by Michele Bachmann, someone who manages to be even crazier and more of a religious extremist. I think all but the most ardent Sarah supporters have come to figure out she is little more than a huckster and a grifter. Bachmann is a true believer.
