Thundercats Premiere Ep 01-02 Review

For those of us who grew up with the original “Thundercats,” we’ve been hearing rumors and musings for years about a re-boot of the show, a movie, etc… finally, it’s here. This new version of “Thundercats” was previewed at Comic-Con and on the Cartoon Network website for months with a “July” premiere date… July 1st came and went and still no definite date for the show… FINALLY, we should have known it would be the last Friday in July, damn near August!! But it’s here and while everyone has their opinions about it, here’s mine.

As with any remake/reboot there has to be changes made and dare I say the changes to the new “Thundercats” make the show and storyline better than the original. Thundera is not a dying planet, but rather a great city on Third Earth where the Thundercats, under the rule of King Claudus, dominate Third Earth. The best idea in this new version would have to be that Snarf no longer speaks! While Snarf was cute and all in the original, he was annoying and even though this new Snarf doesn’t speak, he still provides comic relief. His little squeaks and sounds he makes still resembles a “snarf” and he’s always fearful of what Lion-O is up to. Between his falling into the water after being frightened from his nap, to him making faces in the golden mirror, Snarf is still funny as hell! In the beginning scenes of the episode, Lion-O and Snarf are in a shady part of Thundera and this whole scene reminded me of Aladdin and Abu in the marketplace when they’re stealing the apples. Snarf is running around squeaking much like Abu, being very displeased with his master’s decisions.
It’s here in the shady market that Lion-O first meets Cheetara, for those of you who thought 80s Cheetara was hot, wait until you see this one! I love the new design of her, especially her long hair. A lot of people are complaining about the animation – they don’t like it, its nothing like the original blah blah blah… I would like to point out that I hate anime, I just cannot watch it, but this is a nice combination of anime and “regular” cartoon. They all almost look like people, but cats at the same time, I like it.
While Lion-O is busy buying some “broken” technology that no one believes in and flirting with Cheetara…. Claudus, Tygra, and Jaga are waiting on Lion-O who is apparently supposed to be testing out The Sword of Omens but unlike his big brother Tygra…
