The subconscious mind has a shortcoming, that it records everything as truth. No matter what it is. If you fall asleep with the TV on, the next thing your now ordering a whole box of things you don’t even use, because now you think you may need them. That’s on the softer side. The duality is, you may find yourself more interested in activities you weren’t into before.

I fall asleep with the TV on every night and I never buy anything based upon commercials.

No you can deny your subconscious' effort, only if you are aware your being controlled by it. If you are not you will react to what is input in to it respectively.
