The Photography of Herb Ritts: Distinctive Portraits with Monumental Sensuality

Herb Ritts was self-taught and he took his cues from the desert landscape surrounding his home and his close proximity to Hollywood culture, evident in the graphic quality and visual simplicity of his photographs and the heightened glamour of their subjects. He inserts a sense of rigorous formalism that seems to be inspired by modernist photographers like Edward Weston, August Sander or Man Ray.
The Edwynn Houk Gallery in Zurich recently presented an exhibition of photographs drawn from the collection of the Herb Ritts Foundation. In addition, the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, has recently acquired 69 black-and-white images by the late L.A. fashion photographer valued at close to $1 million, given by his foundation in a single transaction that was part gift and part purchase. A Ritts exhibition is being planned at the Getty, drawing in part from the new acquisition, for April 2012.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution photographs, a photo-gallery and a documentary short film.

It's amazing to consider that Herb Ritts finished college with an economics degree. To see his work, one might think he had studied classic Greek sculpture for decades. It's a shame he passed away so young.

Hi F2AS,
Yes, I agree. It's amazing what some self-taught people end up being able to accomplish. Thanks very much for your comments.
Best wishes to you.

When I was studying for my photography degree in the 80's the professors at DeAnza College treated Ansel Adams like a god, because they were heavy into teaching the Zone System.
The tragedy is that I lost all the photos that I took from that decade, even the ones from my years in Europe and from Yosemite including the famous double rainbow at Nevada Falls.

The pain is mostly the lost memories, but apparently the skills I learned haven't been completely lost since the Zone System still applies in the digital age.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zone_system
"The Zone System can be used in digital photography just as in film photography; Adams himself anticipated the digital image. As with color reversal film, the normal procedure is to expose for the highlights and process for the shadows.
Until recently, digital sensors had a much narrower dynamic range than color film, which, in turn, has less range than monochrome film. But an increasing number of digital cameras have wider dynamic ranges. One of the first was Fujifilm’s FinePix S3 Pro digital SLR, which has their proprietary “Super CCD SR sensor” specifically developed to overcome the issue of limited dynamic range, using interstitial low-sensitivity photosites (pixels) to capture highlight details. The CCD is thus able to expose at both low and high sensitivities within one shot by assigning a honeycomb of pixels to different intensities of light."
