Nick Frost on the Pleasures of "Point Break"

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost might do a homage to sci-fi in their latest film Paul, but the action homage they did in Hot Fuzz is still fresh as ever. “Have you ever fired your gun in the air and gone aaaaaaah?” asks Frost’s character Danny Butterman, referring to the ending of the classic foot chase scene in Point Break where Keanu Reeves can’t bring himself to shoot Patrick Swayze (in a Ronald Reagan mask).

“That’s an amazing chase,” Frost told Current. “Ronald Reagan throws a dog at Johnny Utah! I’m a big fan of that.”

Butterman’s character wants to be Keanu Reeves – he joins the force so he can leap through the air and fire two guns at once, or fire his gun straight up in the air and yell, which he actually gets to do in the Hot Fuzz finale, when, lying on his back, he shoots his Smith & Wesson in the air rather than shoot his own father as he runs away. Hot Fuzz chose to parody Point Break, Frost said, because “it’s a masterpiece.”

If anyone were to scoff at his assessment, he said “the joke is on them.”

“It’s a kick ass heist movie,” Frost continued, “but at times you look at [Gary] Busey, you think, ‘Now it’s a comedy.’” It’s a very broad comedy, when Busey’s rolling around. And then you have the beauty of Johnny Utah. And you also have that heart and spirit of trying to surf the soul, trying to find the greatest wave in the world. And once you put all those things together, you’ve got Point Break. There are so many aspects to it.”

When they were first screening Hot Fuzz, director Edgar Wright invited Point Break director Kathryn Bigelow to attend. “We were just watching her watching it, rather than watching the film,” Frost laughed. “It was one of the most amazing things.”
