You thought American Idol was a big deal? Then you obviously haven't seen the craze around India's own version of the show.

    • One Saturday morning, producer Tracey Chang and I were in a taxi creeping through traffic in Mumbai, India--although India's economy is booming, thanks in part to globalization, its infrastructure is still catching up. We had just passed a large temple for Ganesh, the elephant headed god, and saw a crowd on the street. Unlike some other Indian cities, Mumbai is a financial and media hub, and there aren't many temples or religious observances, so we had the taxi driver stop to see what might be going on. What we found was not religious pilgrims in line for the Ganesh temple, but a secular crowd lining up in front of the television studio next door--waiting to audition for Indian Idol... As you can see in the piece, everyone in the crowd seemed to be in the best mood and was happy to interact with Tracey.
