If I said I was surprised I'd be lying, but sadly over two hundred years later, and NOT very much progress has been made in the country music genre when it comes to 'non-whites'.
This is the first time I've heard of Carl Ray, so I'm not exactly sure how good his singing is,but a wonderful young woman by the name of Rissi Palmer, was actually the first one that drew me back to country music after being away for such a long period of time.
Rissi LOVES country music with 'everything' in her, but perhaps because she's not the right 'skin color' (one would hope and pray this is not the case, but after what I've read on YouTube and other websites, it starts to make you wonder.), things don't seem to have taken off for her (don't know if that's actually a 'Blessing in disguise' or what), and truthfully I'm not sure if it ever will (unless God says different) when it comes to a black female singing songs sung by young blonde haired women with blue eyes (once again, I pray to God that I'm wrong, then again, look at how she's been 'showcased' since she's started. None of the 'popular' day time or evening shows have 'presented' her to the public even one time.).
Not speaking for all white country music fans, but it seems an awful shame that people "won't" allow themselves to look beyond a persons skin color, to the music they've grown up on and love the best (Hint: Rissi Palmer).
Lastly, while I've heard many comments like: "she's not a real country music singer", or "she'd be better off singing R&B, or some other music that black folks like", it makes you wonder what it will finally take for 'other' races who really enjoy singing the music, and have made it a part of their lives be allowed to show the rest of the world just how much they really appreciate it? God help you country folk to stop the hatin and give others a chance as well. - 3 years ago
