Nada Surf is an indie rock band hailing from Brooklyn, New York. Last night the band performed a special show at the Gibson showroom in Beverly Hills. The performance was extremely intimate- the guys played on a small raised stage- lead singer Matthew Caws with guitar in hand, Daniel Lorca on bass and Ira Elliot sitting casually on a plywood box drumming along; for a few of the songs the guys invited up onto the stage cellist Phil Peterson.
The show consisted of a set of around 11 songs- most of which were from their new album “Lucky”, which was released in the US today on Barsuk records. The album has already received some pre-release attention with “Whose Authority” featuring on the indie 103.1 playlist for the past couple of weeks here in Los Angeles. “Lucky” is the fifth album for these guys and promises to be quite a treat. I’ve just started listening to them, but I can already appreciate the soft-pop sound and clever lyrics. Caw’s voice is both strong and calming at the same time- with Lorca and Elliot providing backup vocals and consistently impressive harmonies.
The show ran about an hour and a bit with Caws offering the occasional witty remark about a song or in the case of “Here goes Something”, a track off the new album, he mustered up some real poignancy when he admitted that the song was about his son. All in all the show was great- an awesome display of the band’s talents and a palatable preview of the new album!
