Ungdomskulen: Magically Delicious

I had a chance to see a live performance by the Norwegian band "Ungdomskulen" last night at the Viper Room on Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood. I would like to point out that the only thing more fascinating than the music is the way lead singer and guitarist Kristian Stockhaus dances around on stage. Donned in an 80s-like, neon-striped Adidas track suit, Converse sneakers, and strap-on nerd glasses, a seemingly electrified Stockhaus was an exciting figure to watch. His energy, (which is also present in his bandmates drummer Øyvind Solheim and bassist Frode Flatland), appears to be the physical embodiment of the epic music the band creates. With songs structured around guitar-driven riffs and extreme "vampage"; long, melodic interludes that build into heavy, head-banging slop; and funky, pseudo-disco verses, the band expertly combines the best moments of rock and many other musical styles while simultaneously hindering one's ability to label them as any one genre. This ability to meld musical styles and create something entirely unlike anything else, certainly comes directly from the individual talent each member brings to the songwriting table. If you have a chance to buy their CD or see them live, in the words of Ben Stiller's character in the movie Starsky and Hutch, "Do it...jus' do it!"
