Famed Beatles guru and Transcendental Meditation movement founder, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, died earlier today at an estimated 91 years of age at his home in the Dutch town of Vlodrop. According to a TM spokesman, the Maharishi "died peacefully at about 7pm" local time as a result of "natural causes, his age."

Though he began teaching back in 1955, it was the discipleship of the fab four that catapulted the Maharishi, who was eventually to head a multi-million dollar empire, to his own kind of spiritual stardom. Non-Liverpudlian celebrity followers have included Deepak Chopra, the Rolling Stones and director David Lynch (Twin Peaks and Eraserhead). Definitely an innovative and creative thinker himself, the Maharishi founded a university in Fairfield, Iowa, and also sponsored group meditations intended to bring about world peace and an end to poverty.

We here at Daily Mantra salute the Maharishi for inspiring thousands and following up on many of his dreams for a better world. We also endorse some words of instruction he passed along during a 2006 interview. "Don't fight darkness. Bring the light, and darkness will disappear," he said. Though it is the habit of language to refer to those who have left their bodies as dead, we have little doubt that this one-time physics student from central India even now continues his surrender to the light.
