'Umbrella' was then sent to Mary J. Blige and the bidding war over the song began between Tricky Stewart (producer) and LA Reid and team (CEO of Mary's and Rihanna's Label, Island Def Jam). However, since Mary was busy with the Grammy Awards the the song went to Rihanna.
Luck girl! This song kicked off her career.

I like to take miscellaneous three syllable phrases and work them into the song instead of "umbrella" . . .
like "pancake batta" and "toilet paypa" . . . give it a shot . . . - 4 years ago

Umm not sure that this was the song that kicked off her career. Maybe a more accurate statement is that this song (and video, b/c really it's all about her and the video) took her to the next level.
Her very first song was a pretty big hit, you know, that stupid "Pon De Replay" which I only know because I remember being the catalyst for recognizing the superstar potential thanks to her good looks after seeing this video.
Yes, the truth can be told now, it was during a polo match I had with Jay-Z that I convinced him - on horseback mind you - that this girl was going to be massive and that he needed to go after the rights to this song with the same fervor he summoned to bitch-slap R. Kelly at the beginning of the "Best of Both Worlds" Tour.
