    • I first heard the thermals when russ intense played 'our power doesn't run on nothing" on one of his radio podcasts.

While the voice didn't catch me right away, I listened over and over. His delivery by the middle of the song has a comfortable and commanding tone (I like being yelled at) with lyrics going a little deeper than the surface moan "our power doesn't run on nothing, it runs on blood/ which is easy to attain, when you have no shame" bam!

That, coupled with perfect pop ponk guitar melodies with a hint of twang to cool down the madness makes for one of my favourite* songs of last summer. It sounds live off the floor and had the intensity of a first take (I like 'raw' sounding stuff too)

Back to his voice, turns out, I'm singing in a one night only Cringer (S.F.) cover band, I've never really sang before, and I realize that channeling Lance Hahn (R.I.P.) has made me sound very much like, you guessed it, the singer form the Thermals. So what's the lesson, For the judgment ye judge ye shall surely be judged? Ride a bike? Rock'nRoll still matters?

This would be moot if the nation turned to those fancy transparent double layered solar panels, ruarr sexy!

      ..and nice pod !

*that's how we spell it in Canada, pardon my french :)

    • WOO Portland, I never see any tv about bands from here
I love Portland so much. This band is great too, I agree with them that a government shouldn't be able to control with an overall religion.

    • still, what you are saying is that we should have laws preventing murder, rape, theft, etc. i think current events today show that the US is one of the safest countries to be living in. and its not a matter of opinion about what morals this country was built upon

    • so what you are saying is that we should have laws preventing murder, rape, theft, etc. Our country was built upon these morals and is now one of the best countries to live in currently.

    • lyssalu, maybe you don't, but the christian opinion of 'right' is what our entire government is based on. and enFORCEd by the cops and the law and whatnot. Christaians have been absolutely notorious for this. One instance: The annexation of the Philippines and our president announcing that it was time to "christianize our little brown brothers".
How about the Moral Majority making laws and shoving the cross up people's asses? People use 'the cross' to rape and kill too many. You may have the best of intentions, but everyone does- you have to realize what's done is reality, what's intended is fantasy.

    • this video made me really angry. they completely misunderstand the concept of christianity. it's very insulting. christians do not "force" religion on anyone. people have free will to accept it or not. there is nothing wrong with preaching or having a messege to convey to the world.

    • I was really happy to see them interviewed... and to talk about their music.
I've always wanted to know more about them, and their music, beyond just what I was listening to.

      Great pod.

    • Remember Jello Biafra telling the story about the last time he was in Portland? The story about the bigoted jocks in a bright blue pickup truck - a life-size hot wheels car for “some dumb rich kid”? ..and he was stuck in the phone booth on Burnside as they attempted to assault him calling him a "f*ggot"?

ever since hearing that story I've had reverence for all the punk that happens in Portland. The Thermals weave some serious punk fiber into that scene and kick a lot of ass.

"so I threw the rock... and put a nice size dent in their life-size hot wheels car...." Jello said...

The Thermals sound sweet... like that rock hitting that truck...

    • Yeaaaah Portland!!!
A band with a real message at long last, there are a lot of bands like The Thermals in Portland, all over that don't get the air time and they bloody well should.

Oh, I live near the area in the clip.
      Cheers!
