from someone who has just spent the last week with a constant dial up modem sound in her right ear from going to a festival and not wearing ear plugs, I can tell you it's no fun loosing your hearing. Because you don't actually loose your hearing! The noise is constant, inescapable, and absolutely unbearable. Luckily it seems to have gone now.
Wear ear plugs at gigs, preferably get the ones that are moulded to your ear, or the plastic moulded ones. Don't bother with the foam ones as they don't do much except muffle the sound and spoil your enjoyment.
I love music. I hate hearing loss. I now love my ear plugs. ProGuard Custom Music Earplug are the best IMO.
And for those of you who think it's hardcore to go to gigs without ear plugs, you'll definitely regret it when you can't sleep because of the annoying and constant sing-song ringing in your ears.

As our very loyal user Stop Noise recently instructed me, clean those ear plugs as often as possible. The build of wax could well be the reason for mild tinnitus. In fact, it can be number of things.. Mobile phones and iPods for example!

But IMO, this is the best track in the Radiohead catalogue.

For me, this story raises the question:
Would you rather lose your hearing, or your sight?
Also-
The Bends is not only my favorite Radiohead record, it is among my favorite albums ever.I would choose Street Spirit as its signature track.

Thanks derk, I don't feel as alone on that limb. High and Dry is my personal favorite though. The music video for Just is my favorite of all time.

So that's what the constant ringing is!? Brilliant.
I had to ask the internet for a proper explanation and it told me that:
Tinnitus isn't as much a disease as a possible consequence of ear infections, wax buildup, nasal allergies, damage from loud noises, misuse of medication, physical injury and a bunch of other stuff. And the ringing, buzzing, hissing, whistling, whooshing sound you hear is really the result of signals actually being sent to the brain from inside the head or from within the ear -- without the presence of any sounds!
Finally, the internet told me that scientists really can't identify why the nerve cells that produce the signals are being stimulated.
(Oh, iammyfatehrsson, I couldn't agree more: Bends is best; plus, the lyrics (Just) even fit the moment: "cuz you do it to yourself, you do, and that's what really hurts, you do it yourself, just you, you and no one else.")

I believe jonny greenwood is Radioheads Guitarist... not bassist.
haha
But seriously folks, wear earplugs to every concert, if you cant, you can always get some tissue from the bath room and roll it into your ears.

You're actually very lucky if you can't hear anything but silence when you go deaf. Tinnitus and hyperacusia are far worse and more common when it's because of too loud sound!
I got a trauma once after a concert on my left ear (my left ear don't know how to rock apparently), I didn't go deaf, but still got like 20% loss, I was pretty scary because of the difference with my right ear, and it lasted for like a month, with weird stuff like sound saturation with louder sounds. Now I use earplugs all the time in concerts/clubs!

Somebody inform me what kind of headphones are bad. The other day, I was just trying to imagine how it would like to be deaf and I think I would go crazy hearing nothing but pure silence!

You wouldn't just hear silence. It's the bizarre, unpredictable frightening noises that really drive you crazy, as this suddenly-deaf music journalist will tell you...

I LOVE Easy Star All Stars! Dub Side is on regular rotation on my iPod. I didn't realize they did a cover of OK Computer as well. Good call, huntre.

My favorite was "Radiodread", a song by song Reggae cover of "OK Computer" by Easy Star All-Stars, the same folks who gave us "Dub Side Of The Moon".
Sorry to hear about the hearing loss. I came down with Pnuemonia and lost my hearing for about a week.

This is a non-story. Almost goes deaf? How does a piece of cr@p story like this get to the top of the page?

The longevity and creativity of Radiohead demands respect, but if you don't like their music that suits me fine.
Am I the only person in the world whose favorite Radiohead album is The Bends?

Oh my god! I think I have that! I just thought it meant people were talking about me. Like, the ringing in the ears and stuff? Damn! I knew I should've worn earplugs to all those clubs and concerts!

Ha! You are a rare breed indeed, Mr. Bromley. I think there must be a lot of people who actually don't like Radiohead, but who are afraid to say so because they are such the quintessential hip band, and not liking them is kind of like saying you don't like The Beatles. I think they're brilliant, but what do I know!?
