James Mercer is a very smart man, not too long ago I was reading an old article (see link) where he was pinpointing the reason why bands like the Shins, Band of Horses, etc. are becoming popular:
"Growing up in the age of Wal-Mart and 7-Eleven -- which was the landscape of my youth -- I'm craving authenticity. I think everyone is. You know, there is something real out there you can buy, but you just have to scratch the surface to find it. I think people are sick of fakeness."
Its interesting to find the root of the indie music tree, which has flourished in recent years, particularly in Australia and central America. Mercer's breakaway from Sub Pop, I think, is an expression of this: music played and produced by the band for their fans.
