Shock: music at festivals damages hearing

Now this probably won't come as a shock to you, but loud music at festivals damages your hearing!

The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) has conducted a survey of over 2000 festival-goers from Leeds, Reading, Glastonbury, Latitude and Rise festivals, asking them if they believed listening to loud music at festivals had affected their hearing.

Over 50% of festival revellers admitted that the music had damaged their hearing, with the majority (84%) saying they had 'experienced dullness of hearing or ringing' in their ears as well. 50% also admitted that they had experienced pain in their ears whilst listening to loud music but only just over 15% of them had gone about trying to protect their hearing.

The RNID has warned that if party-goers continue to listen to music at such volume, then they risk damaging their hearing permanently.

The RNID's campaign, Don't Lose the Music, aims to raise awareness of the dangers of listening to loud music.

    • I spent the weekend at a music festival and now need everything to be repeated 6 times before I can hear it. It was worth it though, but I do wonder if everybody in our generation will be completely deaf by the time we hit our 70s ...

    • Good shout, Matt. I'm partially deaf already and I can't believe the risks people take with their hearing. It's so incredibly precious! And I'd do anything to protect my remaining hearing. Why not just get a pair of gig-friendly ear plugs (they keep the music, lose the damage) and remember to turn your iPod down sometimes? Perhaps it's not until you're faced with losing it that you realise just how worthy of care your hearing is...?

      Me too!

I've DJ'd for years and always worry about my hearing. I've got mates who suffer so badly from tinnitus, we always try and wear earplugs underneath our headphones if we're mixing in a club now. sadly I don't think some of them will get their hearing back to what it used to be.

There's loads of famous (well in the drum and bass land where I live) DJs who suffer from hearing problems, most famously Roni Size, LTJ Bukem and DJ Fresh. LTJ Bukem even promotes earplugs designed specifically for mixing. He's a lovely bloke, I used to work for him! :D

    • i think the whole issue of loud music is a bit silly as we are still going to listen to stuff to loud any way + hearing gets worse as we get older any way.

If they want to worry about us damaging the ear they should consider banning ear buds as my tutors wife pulled a layer off her ear drum off using them.
