If you feel that this year's Mercury Prize nominees do not represent the 'best of British', here are two alternatives by Drowned in Sound and Popjustice.

DiS' Pluto Prize highlights 12 brilliant albums that missed the Mercury cut. Why Pluto? "Because it’s about as far away from Mercury as you can get in the Solar System."

Registered users can pick a winner from: The Bug, Foals, Fuck Buttons, Future of the Left, PJ Harvey, Johnny Foreigner, M.I.A., Mystery Jets, Portishead, These New Puritans, Wild Beasts, and Robert Wyatt.

Popjustice's Twenty Quid Music Prize, on the other hand, celebrates the best British pop single of 2008 and "rewards its creator with a crisp twenty pound note".

This year's nominees include: Goldfrapp, Sugababes, Leona Lewis, Girls Aloud, Dizzee Rascal feat. Calvin Harris, Bloc Party, Daggers, The Ting TIngs, Mark Ronson feat. Amy Winehouse, Hot Chip, Groove Armada feat. Mutya Buena, and Little Boots.
