Shock! Mercury Music Prize doesn't go to Bookies' favourite!

Manchester rockers Elbow have taken this year's prestigious Mercury Music Prize with their fourth album, 'The Seldom Seen Kid,' blowing the bookies' favourites out of the water in true Mercury Music prize style.

Dubstep-producer Burial, either already knew he hadn't won it or was keen to keep up his Banksy-esque anonymity, as he didn't turn up.

    • The Seldom Seen Kid is a good album, but it's not a release that will go down in music history - and the same applies to Myths of the Near Future by Klaxons, last year's winners.

I guess the Klaxons took the prize because they were somehow representing this whole "new rave" thing, but just one year later, their album sounds terribly passé.

      Elbow's album sounds old already.

    • They kop out every year. It's sposed to be about forward thinking, pushing-the-boundary stuff, not someone on their 4th album.

I think every year they lose a little bit credibiility as an awards ceremony.

    • As always with this prize though, album sales of the nominated artists have seen a boost. In particular, Portico Quartet, who nobody had heard of before this year's comp. Sales for their album 'Knee-Deep in the North Sea' have jumped 105 percent.

I still say Elbow are a poor man's Doves.

    • I like the Mercury Prize because it often gives attention to lesser-known musicians. I'm guessing that all the speculation and media favouring Burial for the win boosted his visibility in the market a great deal and even without the trophy, he'll be getting a lot more attention and new fans anyways.

    • All I can say is that the judges copped out, again.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I always understood that the Mercury Prize was about awarding new music, people just starting out in the industry and doing something original and fresh. Now it seems the bland middle class judges just hand it out to whatever CD THEY like the best.

Shame. Its a real missed opportunity. Although Burials no-show cant have done him any favors.
