Foo Fighters, Van Halen, others: McCain, don't use our songs

What ’s a campaign event without some good tunes? Before long, John McCain might find out. Last week, rock group The Foo Fighters joined a growing list of musicians- including Van Halen, and John Mellencamp- who are outraged that McCain has been using their songs without permission.

    • I understand that he needs to get permission to use their music but come on people...do you not know what this man has done for our country...wake the "f" up. He was a POW for crying out loud. He deserves respect and if I were a musician, I would be honored if he wanted to use my music....This is simply my opinion and does not mean I plan on voting for him but I do find him to be a very honorable man and one that has earned his right as a American and has done more for this country than any of the selfish musicians that are angry that he is using one of their worthless songs...

    • If McCain can't get it together to do simple publishing and master licenses how can he possibly run a country with all the paperwork that entails. This is just another sign of his utter incompetence.

    • Thats just what McSame is all about. He just love to take wrongs and make rights.
      1. playing copyrighted music for his own political gains without permission
      2. taking a woman with lots of kids including a prgnant teen who boyfriend should by charge with rape and tried to make it all right in the eyes of americans. Now teen preg in all ok in america
      3. using his exp as a pow as qualification and exp to be pres. all pow should stand up and show their scars and said I want to be president too. And finally TOKYO CHIC dont forget to include yourself as one of those jackasses.all clubs and dj must get permission from musicians to play their music some of them getaway with it but its the right thing to do. remember this is a country of laws and not of lawlessness McSame.

    • The point is McSame believes he doesn't need permission, because, like Bush and Cheney, he thinks he's above the LAW...so, he'll do exactly as he chooses...get used to it if you vote for him...

Pretty much that.. this isn't a matter of copyright, it's a matter of common decency. Mccain punked the Foo Fighters song without even asking first - it's really bad form, considering this is politics, and mis saying a word has lost people elections before.

Ok, and not to mention the fact hijacking a song and using it when most of the country is watching you is a bad idea.

    • I've said it before, but when musicians start making their music about politics, I say F**k 'em. Music is art. Don't start telling human beings who can or can't listen to your music.

This isn't about copyright, because these same musicians wouldn't give permission to the McCain campaign if they asked for it. It's a presidential race for hell sake. If it's about copyright than go after the thousands of high schools who play your music before football and basketball games too. Go after the bands who play your music at college football games around the country. Go after the independent DJ's who blast your music all night long, making a profit. No, this is simply about politics and it stinks. Make music for the world, not a political party. Jackasses.

no we only go after the douche bags like mcaine. The world is not fair. We take out the douche bags and we let the kids listen to our music before the football games for free. we target selectively, those who we consider our enemies, like mccaine.

Dude, how would you like a song you wrote with all your heart and soul to be played as the rally theme song for a senile old republican fuck and his pitbull oil whore?

"MY HERO" has been played in many places, by many people. And naturally as a song on a label, it is a commodity bought and sold, it becomes a piece of media.

BUT - there ARE boundaries to be sensitive to
      for example,
Did you know, they were playing David Grey repeatedly at Abu Ghraib during their torture sessions? David Grey made a statement of condemnation, and rightly so. He did NOT WANT TO BE ASSOCIATED IN THE LEAST WITH ABU GHRAIB!!!

Well, Dave Grohl's statement comes from a similar sentiment of misrepresentation. He wants nothing to do with the nasty backward-ass political tactics of inept Republicans that only caters to the provincialism and latent (or overt) bigotry of the uneducated masses.

Ultimately, Dave has every right to defend the message and meaning of his artwork.

      Go DAVE!

I see what youre trying to say but yes this is about politics and not copyright law. And yes, music is about art, but McCain is politicizing certain songs by using them in his campaign and I think the musicians have every right to tell them not to do so. By using the Foo Fighters and countless other bands at their rally, its almost like saying the bands stand behind them when that is a lie. Its like putting their endorsement on their campaign without asking them.

So it makes sense for them to go after McCain and not the local football team because the local team isnt trying to make a statement with the song. Im sure they would go after the KKK and any other group using their song if they didnt support their ideals and frankly they have every right to because in doing so they are defending their musical integrity.

It was never about copyrights. That does not mean that they do not have the right to ask this old dirty bastard not to use their music to further his crooked exploits. Copyrights give them the lawful permission to exercise those rights.

Stop playing dumb. You know exactly what this is about.High school marching bands and independent DeeJays do not have political agendas

Yeah but what about all the conservative people who have supported all these bands by buying their songs. They don't give a sh*t about what the politics of their favorite bands are. They just support the band because the music is good and they want to listen to it!

Who is the music for at these rallies? The people. It's used to make them happy, to pump them up, to enjoy the experience.

Who are these people? They are half the population of the United States. People who have supported these bands despite their political beliefs. People who like good music. So my problem is that these bands now turn around and tell these people that they don't deserve to be listening to their music because they support a party or politician they don't believe in.

I think it's pretty lame that they don't think that half of the population is deserving to listen to their music because of their beliefs. Especially when this half I'm talking about created half of the fame and financial profits of these bands.

Total BS. I've supported Van Halen and the Foo Fighters a lot. Their music is awesome. I've actually bought lots of their music online. So for them to tell me that I can't listen to their music at a public John McCain rally because they don't like John McCain, well, f**k them. F**k them for politicizing their music. We didn't give a sh*t what your politics were when we bought your CD's.

Sure they have a right to complain and choose sides, but again...f**k them for it!

Apparently they didn't make it for a political party. Especially not to be played at their events.

It's simple, they don't want it played and they don't want to be associated with McCain.

They wrote the fucking music...so no it's not bullshit. It does not BELONG to you or any one else except the musicians. And reguardless of how much their fans love it, it still doesn't mean they can use it for whatever they want.

And don't think music or musicians are above politics because no one is.

I am an artist and if any of my work was used like this, especially for purposes I didn't believe in you can bet i'd take legal action.

Barracuda was a song about giving the finger to the GOP. Yet the GOP used it because of Sarah Bulldog Palin's nickname.

Somehow, that's insulting the work of the artist and I'd be pissed too.

dabne youre missing the point....its fine for you to listen to their music...hell McCain can blast My Hero all he wants in the privacy of his own home. But he is using their music for commercial reasons. He is using their music to sell something, himself and his campaign.

Lets look at it this way, would it be ok for McCain to use the Mona Lisa on his political fliers or in his ads? What about if Obama used Stary Night for his logo or on his webpage? These are pieces of art put out there for the world to enjoy yes, BUT they cannot be used for commercial purposes and a political campaign is commercial.

This same rule applies to music, if McCain was having a backyard BBQ he can blast whatever song as loud as he wants BUT when its a political rally it becomes a commercial event. How would you like it if Obama took a drawing you did or a poem you wrote and used it for his campaign? I bet youd be pretty ticked off and that would be understandable. Id be pissed if Obama or anyone else took art that I made and used it for commercial purposes without my permission, especially if that commercial purpose was something I didnt stand behind.

The point you are missing is that these same artists turn around and donate their licensing money to the campaign of there choosing. Which as I have said is perfectly in their right to do so. For example Heart just did that. They took the licensing money from McCain for Baracuda and turned around and gave it to Obama. All that I am saying is don't use your music for political purposes. I think that is BS.

It's not about copyright in this instance it's about pure politics. Michael Jordan said it best when he was criticized for not publicly endorsing a black democratic candidate years ago. He said, "Republicans buy my sneakers too." He realized that certain people were trying to use his celebrity to influence politics and he said "I'm not going to play that game." I'm not going to publicly alienate the millions of Republicans who have helped make me who I am."

I have no issues about musicians supporting candidates. But don't use your music that millions of republicans bought from you and then turn around and say you and your party can't use it even if you pay for it but the Democrats can.

      Total BS

Make it available to all or none. Don't make music for only one group of people.

    • "McCain had been using “My Hero” at songs and rallies, they [The Foo Fighters] fired off a joint statement saying, “The saddest thing about this is that “My Hero” was written as a celebration of the common man…To have it used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song.”

Not to mention that's just pure conceitedness.

Damn yankee is what people overseas call American capitalist. This is a heavy metal "redneck" song. Nobody has refused Obama permission to use their songs.
