The 23-year-old man vomited, passed out and died on Thursday during the "Big Stomach King" contest at Dayeh University in central Taiwan. He had pulled ahead of 30 other teams.
Officials said the student — who was described as tall and strong — had scoffed two buns filled with rice and cheese as well as some of his teammate's food

Since he was in the lead, I think they should declare him the winner.

Typical male(and female to a lesser extent) behavior who feel they must compete or 'go with the crowd'. You see it all the time. "man jumps into shallow end of pool" (case I had on my last day of nursing school)....celebrating getting married and getting his masters?! Epidemics of binge drinking, fast driving, drugs...you name it. He is just another statistic on a long list of "stupid human tricks". God bless his family

Wow, that's really sad..
Did nobody notice?!
Really, now.
SOMEONE must've been watching only him and noticed that he suddenly slumped over a bit more and stopped eating!
'Tis very sad. - 3 years ago

I think it's incredibly sad that people are admired & put on a pedestal for basically over-eating. I understand they make a lot of sacrifices & train very hard to get to that sort of level, but it's unhealthy & as this shows, completely unsafe.

Damn! Where *are* all of you wonderful, cognizant people during Hot Dog Eating Contest time in Coney???
May be next July 4th, we can get a contingent together and protest loudly and offer a small bag of carrots and grapes to people and show placards of starving people with empty bowls of food or people begging for food!
I'm always just waiting for one of those hot dog gorging morons' hearts to explode *while* they're stuffing them down in front of the cameras and entire crowd!
It's almost a sacrelig in NY to say anything against it. Since I'm a born and bred Jersey girl who just happens to live in Coney Eye, I have no problem speaking up against such nearly immoral things.
The way they react, you'd think I'd slapped their mothers or came into their house and took a crap on their coffee table! :o

Coney Island's Hot Dog Eating Contest is about as low brow as you can get. It attracts thousands of idiots and they have a count-down clock, counting down to the next one.
Really a testament to waaaay too much food, waaaay too much time and waaaay too few brains!!!

It is sad, and I feel for his family, to lose their son in such a way. It's a shame, but stuff like this will come up now and then, as it seems our constant desire to be 'the best' at anything.

I hear the word "karma" getting kicked around and misused everyday.
But this my friends is indeed karma.
Now where is the story about the thousands of people who starved to death today?

I wouldn't call it gluttony so much as stupidity. it's not so much about the food, it's more about the competition.
still, a gross way to die.

GeoffNI:
eating fast isn't a significant problem as long as you don't choke. i won a spaghetti-eating contest when i was seven, and i doubt any of the participants suffered any ill-effects. the competition was to find out who could finish a single plate the fastest. it's the combination of eating quickly and eating a lot, often more than you would ordinarily eat over a two- or three-day period, that causes situations like this.
