Musicians Love McCain

DailyFix
As Election Day approaches and campaigns wind down, the Daily Fix looks back at the accumulation of McCain music mishaps. Controversy has ensued for the Repub's after the unapproved use of music by the following artists: Chuck Berry, Abba, Orleans, John Mellencamp, Jackson Browne, Heart, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, and now Survivor. Find out what they had to say and why writer, Gretchen Peters is voicing her disapproval. Not excluding the backers - Tracey Lawrence, Gretchen Wilson, and Lee Greenwood have lent their musical support, and Hank William's Jr. has made an interesting alteration to one of his tunes.

The Daily Fix is the first music blog on TV airing on Current TV. The 2-minute daily music news show delivers cutting edge music news and insightful opinion in compelling short doses, utilizing MP3's and user-generated video from all over the web. Hosted by Douglas Caballero, the show airs daily at 9:31am, 1:31pm, 5:31pm, 8:31pm, 12:31am, 4:31am Eastern Time and can be found online at current.com/dailyfix.

    • what pisses me off about that song by Hank Williams Jr. is that its extremely opiniated. how about instead of making his listeners into haters making them into educated people? If he wanted to help McCain, which can't be done thank goodness, he would at least try to re-write a song boostin McCain's policies...

    • McCain has to be hurt when ABBA doesn't let him use their song, seeing as how McCain has openly stated his love for them.

    • You know if you go to a country and western concert one thing you see at all of them is The American Flag. Not that I give two cents about any musicians or actors thoughts on politics but it kinda makes you think.

I hate to break this to you, but the country music performances I've seen, with the exception of Farm Aid, have been more likely to display the Confederate "stars and bars" than the true "stars and stripes" American flag.

    • This is like Seal and Klumm - Who cares what these people "musicians" think in the end. They are popular for their entertainment value only. Lets stay on topic and on the issues.

check out Obama's TRUE voting record compared to his "wonderful speeches" that contridict everything that comes out of his mouth. Oh and you can check out McCains record as well - this site isn't deticated to one side only.

Inform yourselves people - and not just what "people" are telling you. It's a bit of reading but worth it if you want the truth.

Thanks for trying but they don't want the truth. It is so much easier for them to be a sheep. 90% of the people on here couldn't tell you who the sec of state is yet they are so "enlightened" about politics. What a joke.

    • This has happened for the last few elections - where Republicans are chastened for playing music of liberal artists that nobody bothered to research before using.

It just goes with their theme though. If his campaign is not going to properly research and prepare his own vice presidential nominee, then why would they bother looking into who wrote what song they're using?

      One week to go!

      my first thought as well.

      surprise surprise!

I am slightly down at hank williams Jr's apparent ignorance. I really did enjoy the song Family Traditions as a good ole beer n bar song.

      Too bad.

    • This is just plain funny. Let's face it, no matter who you''re voting for, everybody knows an Obama Inauguration Party would have much better music at it.

i still dont know what he is
famous for and i really dont
      care...but he is sending
      more wrong messages about obama
in other words he is making it
      harder for the undecided voters
that go to mccain/palin rallies or obama/biden
      rallies...

Who? Maybe Hank Jr should hit the cocaine again.

    • Owners of mechanical rights of songs (rights to the actual recorded work) have control over where those songs are used for commercial purposes and are compensated when they allow them to be used in commercials, movies, and such - appropriate since their use in that context is like a tacit endorsement of the product. They should have the same control over their use in political contexts as well, with the right to refuse use and be compensated for any allowed use. Free publicity is great, but I'd be damn pissed if my music was attached to something or someone I opposed.

    • They're working on passing an intellectual property rights law that would allow the government to seize bank accounts of those who steal copyrighted material...

First, I thought it was a horrible idea... but does that mean we could freeze all the RNC funds?

Teacher? Isn't the word I'm looking for... hypocrisy?

      Man... My head hurts.

    • I honestly think that musicians should retain all rights to use and distribution of their music themselves. I mean heck, they did think to write those words and music. They should be able what context it is displayed in.

They do have the rights to the sogs the write. It is when they SELL the rights do they give them up. Did they hold a gun to Gretchen Peters and the other's heads to take this music? No they sold out to "the man". Now they need to shut up, spend the money, and when it is gone-go back to waitng tables.

    • If I were a musician and did not agree with a particular political party's views, I sure as hell would not want my music associated as the soundtrack to their campaign. And since it's my music, I should every right to deny them that use.
