NME announces Cool List

NME's annual light-hearted Cool List is published today, with the top accolade going to Crystal Castles frontwoman Alice Glass, the second woman ever to top the the list since it began in 2002.

The NME's new bands editor Alex Miller says: "Alice Glass is the opposite of the socialite queen bees running UK music scenes, a woman seemingly forged from off-cuts from Dennis Hopper's desperate punk movie Out of the Blue," adding, "Does the Cool List matter? Of course not. But at least it's fun."

Following on from a controversial performance at last year's Glastonbury, Jay-Z took the number two spot ahead of MGMT's Andrew VanWyngraden (3rd) and Arctic Monkeys/The Last Shadow Puppets frontman Alex Turner (4th).

    • dev hynes owns everyone's soul. he needs to be in the top ten, possibly beating out jay-z. & santogold needs to be higher too. i'm glad KOL is getting props; love those guys.

      i used to write a fanzine... and when he was in test icicles he refused to do an interview because he 'doesn't do interviews'.
      I was writing a fricking fanzine!!?? How up his arse is that... oh wait... no as soon as the NME came calling he was rolling around on the floor letting them tickle his belly.

    • Even Alice Glass' name is cool. But Jay Z in second spot? Further proof that NME's opinion on anything shouldn't be trusted.

    • I think that picture is photoshopped. Everybody knows Alice Glass is not able to smile.

      My 2008 cool list would include M83, Lykke Li, Leila, Robyn, Camille, Doveman and a young Italian songwriter called Le Luci Della Centrale Elettrica (video).

      I saw the guy from Glasvegas on Nevermind the Buzzcocks... didn't take his sunglassses off indoors... that is not cool... not cool at all. IDIOT! They're just J&MC rip-offs anyway.
