Oh, those poor 93-year-old fingers. He has attempted all sorts of tricks to coax life out of them. On rides to gigs, he used to sit in the passenger's seat and press them against the dashboard. He would soak them. Put splints on them. Wrap tape around them.

The calcium deposits worsened. The arthritis deepened. One by one, his fingers gave up on him.

"The biggest problem is you think you've got your fingers," Paul said. "And when you go to play something, you realize you don't have [them].
