2006 was all about the Arctic Monkeys and 2007 means new-rave, but what genre has dominated the music scene this year? According to the Guardian and Uncut, 2008 belongs to folk. Laura Marling, Noah and the Whale, Bon Iver and winners of the first Uncut Music Award Fleet Foxes are among the acts who delivered lauded and successful folk albums this year.
Pat Long, curator of the monthly In the Pines folk night in London, finds the reason behind the phenomenon in the simplicity of this genre: "you don't need to know how to use Pro Tools or some other computer program to make it, you just need a guitar or ukulele".

When I first saw the title, I though "Yeah right" but I love Bon Iver, Noah and the Whale, and Laura Marling. I guess it's time for me to redefine my notion of folk.

I love folk with originality, I just hope everone doesn't end up sounding alike and ruin the whole movement. When something becomes popular it doesn't usually take very long for it to become corrupted.
