With the advent of Web 2.0, independent musicians are more powerful now than ever. They have all the resources in the world to make a name for themselves without the need to sign under a major label.

I like asthmatic Kitty's approach. Even though i may not always agree with Pitchfork's review of a cd, i do check them regularly enough to see what is a new release, and in turn will see what is available for semi cheap download. (especially if the do highly endorse it.)
