While frontman Robert Plant originally sat down with Ben Jones on Absolute Radio to talk about his current work with singer/violinist Alison Krauss, the conversation eventually turned to the Led Zeppelin reunion that could have been.
"The reason that it stopped was because we were incomplete and we've been incomplete now for 28 years," Plant says. "No matter what you do, you have to really guard the discretion of what you’ve done in the past and make sure that you have all the reasons and the right place to be able to do something with absolute and total conviction."
He adds, "I think the thing about it is really, is that to visit old ground, it's a very incredibly delicate thing to do, and the disappointment that could be there once you commit to that and the comparisons to something that was basically fired by youth and a different kind of exuberance to now, its very hard to go back and meet that head on and do it justice."
During the interview, Plant also confirmed that he is already working on new material with Alison Krauss after the success of their 2007 album, "Raising Sand". "Raising Sand" was nominated for five awards at this year’s 51st Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

Led Zep without Robert Plant is like Nirvana without Kurt Cobain. Time for the band to bow out gracefully and skip touring.

I respect his decision to stay out. If you really understood what he was saying, then he was saying that it wasnt just about the absence of Bonham. He was also expressing the anxiety he feels over the expectation everyone will have of LedZep to match or out-do what they did back in the 70's. And asking an artist to outdo themselves decades later is asking quite a bit. He knows that they will never be able to match "black dog" "ten years gone" "kashmir" (this list could go on for days but ill leave it at that just so you get the point). But in a way Led Zep is still making new music because everyday you can hear new bands basically pulling their influence directly from Led in order to make new songs. LED IS NOT DEAD!

Whatever. Who the f*&^ in their right minds would sit their and judge the greatest band ever. I mean I know Page can do it, from what I hear from Plant these days he can still hit the notes, Mr Jones has still got it and I don't think anyone can replace Bonham better than his own blood. So what they can't party as hard? COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!

As much of a lover of Led Zeppelin's great music that I am, and even though I would have loved to see these gods play live since that was never gonna be an option since I was born in the late eighties, I have to respect the man for being sincere and speaking a great truth. Many times such things cannot be brought back to life or share in the same capacity of creativity that they once possessed. Imagine they did get back together and their music wasn't quite what fans of all demographics had expected, then there would be immense criticism over the band and it's individual members' abilities, ignoring the prestige of their older art in favoritism of comparison.

I think he's doing a fantastic job with Alison Krauss right now. He's moved on. Shouldn't all of us?

Its never been about anything but Robert. Go back to the beginning he was a self absorbed prick and never grew up. Four good albums then a load of self pretentious crap.

I said it before and I'll say it again. No John Bonham equals no Led Zeppelin. I definitely agree with plant. Plus he has gone on to prove he can have a successful career without Zeppelin anyway.

I would love to see a reunited Led Zeppelin live but I see his point and don't blame him for not wanting a reunion.

Yeah I guess "fossil rock" does get old. Then again Aerosmith is from roughly the same era as Zep but they kept on rockin through the years and I would still like to see Aerosmith live.

Better left the way it is. Wish many bands from that time would realize this, "better to stop while you're ahead".

I see Robert's point but at the same time a reunion would give 2 generations of fans the chance to experience Led Zep live as well as fans from their own generation and I too think Bonham's son would have been an acceptable replacement..

Mike_Johnston:
but they would be lame and old for the younger generation, confirming their suspicions that lame, old bands are actually really lame and old lol. and their parents are lame and old for listening to them.
theres no chance it would be the same it would only be good as nostalgia for the old ppl.... like paul mccartney headlining the next coachella wtf is that shit since when was paul mccartney ever a headlining coachella caliber solo artist???

Great explanation. I still think John Bonham's son would be a great fill in though.
