M.I.A. 'gives a voice to Tamil Tigers'

Although she's not nearly as popular in Sri Lanka as she is in the US and Europe, M.I.A. grew up there and her father is a leader in the Tamil separatist movement. And while most of her fans wouldn't notice, some who know her work well say she's branded herself as an advocate for the rebel group. The Tigers have been labeled a terrorist operation by the US and European nations. But M.I.A. assures us that she doesn't support terrorism, but instead drawing attention to the plight of Sri Lanka's minority.
What do you think about the political message she's sending out?

      Hi Brendan_M, please explain to us all, how you know they are murderess terrorists and how you know they recruit child soldiers.. suicide bombing is wrong.

      Recruiting child soldiers are wrong. Please explain where you get these facts from, do you get them from actually being with the Tamil tigers themselves, have you seen this , or have you heard about this from various media . Media plays a lot in propaganda. I do not support any act in violence . I am against both sides. both should stop and negotiate. Until the problems of the ethnic conflict is resolved, this problem of rebliousness will continue. Sl government are very corrupted much like many governments around the world. But understand, the state terror was inflicted on Tamil people, they peacefully and politically protested, but they had a response of violence set up on them first by the government. then the liberation started. this happens all over the world. Have you ever thought sometimes the children may have joint voluntarily by witnessing their parents, killed, tortured or raped by the sl government. The child soldiers remark is actually a myth, they have soldiers who are above 18, some have been 16, but have joint voluntarily. also the government has killed a lot more . they have set up concentration camps since 1948, burnt, raped, bombed tortured Tamil people. . but the government do not publicise that to the rest of sri lanka, there is a lot of evidence supporting this. I do not support the tigers, but a lot can understand why they retaliate. at the same time as sensible individuals one should not go by what they hear from media or any government , I rather see evidence, or be there to experience it, or hear it from the horses mouth. I can gladly say that I and many sri lankans have seen and experienced the STATE TERROR from the sri lankan government. My sinhalese friends have also experience their fare share of state terror from the government.

    • your source is wrong. Her father was a member and leader of another Tamil separatist movement. There are were other movements other than the Tamil tigers. Tamil tigers just dominated. one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Please know the facts before you release stuff, you have taken your own interpretation. Also we all know that media is heavily controlled. So please know your facts and history on the topic.
      M.I.A is like many others of the sri lankan community who do not believe in violence. But know the truth of state terror, government terror, and their systematic genocide. Please think and research by listening to all sides. Also look at evidence of what the sri lankan government have done. Not all Sinhalese people, but the corrupted politicians. M.I.A is a voice of many of those who fled the world and have succeeded across all seas, as they were oppressed. The Tamil Diaspora.

    • her father is not a leader in the tamil tigers, please get your facts correct. All she is doing is creating awareness about the genocide that has gone in sri lanka against the tamils from state terror by the SL Government.

      she is nto a terrorist.

      Both parties have to stop, i do not approve of both, but all Lankans know sinhalese and tamils and muslim. The tamil tigers are a by product of state terrorism and ethnic cleansing.

      "M.I.A. was born in Britain but moved to Sri Lanka when she was 6 months old so that her father, an engineer and a leader in the Tamil separatist movement, could help fight for an independent Tamil homeland. Her childhood took her across northern Sri Lanka, wracked by insurgency, to India and back to Britain, where her mother and siblings settled into a public housing project outside London. Her father remained in Sri Lanka. She now calls New York home."
