After keeping fans waiting for over four hours, he walked on stage smoking a cigarette and wearing a disheveled dark suit, sneakers and his scraggly long hair and beard, then began rapping to a beat played by the DJ and nodding to the music, although most of the lyrics were unintelligible. Then started a fight with an audience member, followed by a stage dive and security escort.
Anyone else reckon he's trying a little too hard?

Another rich, albeit, talented asshole, flexing his monster Hubris muscles. The tragedy being that media time is spent on such a dorky purchase. Not to mention any dweeb willing to wait for the "Phoenix Rap Rise". Geez, get a grip, people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

The hip hop thing has got to be a joke. How can you go from Johnny Cash to Jay-Z? Too big a step!

You know we could analyze this to death..... he's had to live up to his brother's fame, he's lived in a fishbowl, his parent's were hippies......
He's clearly not doing himself any good, and yes we who like him are feeling bad about it but on the other hand hopefully someone he cares about eventually can get to him. (because if this IS for publicity it's bad all the way a round) Get it together, Joaquin! - 3 years ago

If it is an act, then I have to give a bad review both to the writing and the characters. The character he created seems like a cheap rip-off of Jim Morrison. Everything about this movie, er, I mean “legitimate career change being filmed by friends in the industry” seems rather hackneyed. Starting a fight with a audience member? Acting “spacey” on late night talk shows?
C’mon. If you’re going to create a new character at least put some serious effort into the plot! Now had he actually got a skin darkening treatment (like Downey’s character in “Tropic Thunder”) and started dressing like a gangsta while rapping….THAT might have been a little more interesting.
But as it stands now I have to give the entire performance piece, er, I mean “homage to Andy Kaufman” a C+.
If his “career change” comes on Comcast’s ON DEMAND channel, yeah, I might rent it….but until the movie is finished I’m not going to bother watching.

Think that sounds bad, check out hip hop's latest 'star' on David Letterman. He looked like he was having a good time. in his head.

Yeah, but look at this guy. He's clearly not making much of an effort.
Did you read about Afleck making a 'doc' following Phoenix's new career move? I reckon it's all a stunt. He doesn't care the slightest about his new tunes, just wants a bit of attention and a laugh. - 3 years ago

ZombiePhil23:
have you ever been to a rap concert?
the problem with hip hop right now are those "artists" on major labels repping it wrong and keeping things stagnant, and people like you, who assume the main stream image of hip hop reflects on the entire genre. like it always has been before, the good shit is underground. you just have to find it, and thats half the fun.
