It's not all about the instrument just looking weird! Some of these were designed to produce some sounds that a regular guitar can't! Some were for world records ! Anyway wouldn't it be much cooler to see something weird on stage rather then the usual so & so is a great guitarist ,but they just kinda stand & play! Primus has a dude playing a saw blade & a dude playing a one string bass with a drumstick & people love that! If your going to be on stage you gotta give the crowd a show! Push people's expectations out the damn window, step up be brilliant,do some stuff that others don't! Yeah you can be a great musician do a great show & play some normal instrument, but all that shows is the you can play great music,it doesn't show anything real different from the normal basic ! I like when people just burn the rule book & do things their own way!

NuclearLullaby:
You've hit the nail on the head here. I'd love to hear some of the crazy sounds these guitars can make.
Primus is a great example of transcending people's expectations and traditional ideas of music. Les Claypool has to be one of the most innovative, (and just plain weird/interesting), bassists out there. That is why, as an aspiring bass player myself, he's an idol.
Many other bands have also used the saw blade. When Korn did their unplugged show/album, they too utilized this eccentric musical "instrument", creating an eerie sound I thouroughly enjoyed.
Thanks for your comment!

NuclearLullaby, thanks for saying exactly what I was thinking, couldn't have said it better myself.
On the guitar note, hasn't anyone else seen ZZ top's crazy guitars? Or am I the only Southern here?

A band formerly known as Charlie Burton and the Hiccups had a great guitar player by the name of Phil Shoemaker. He had a guitar he would bring out from time to time that was made out of a 2x4. It was a working man's (and woman's) band.

Man. Modern guitars are ugly enough without the additional innovation. Call me conservative, but society should quit while it's ahead.

Weird just about sums it up... something to take our minds off of politics... bordering on the absurd...
The sitar-guitar is pretty cool, though... I wonder how it sounds...

This stuff is definitely amusing. But aren't these folks one-trick ponies? You're interesting because of the weirdness of your axe rather than the talent, the discipline and training, the inspiration of your playing? Nothing to be proud of.
Really, I'm no fan of automobile racing, but I did like the premise of the Can-Am contest. The cars were the same. They rotated, so that every team used every car at some point along the way. The difference, therefore, was due to the skill of team and driver rather than equipment.

No actually, since that's not even a website. Didn't come up when I typed it in anyway.
"Taken" would be implying I "stole" this clip, and I always cite my source websites.

You're right.
But it used to be a website with an archive of hundreds of stupid guitars and basses like the ones you've listed.
http://web.archive.org/web/20020604025328/www.bunnybass.com/amusing/amusingbass....It's since shut down. I know for a fact that some of those basses you've got up there were on this website's "Amusing Archive"

When it comes to weird instruments I just love them! Here's something for those who like eastern music, but still want a slightly western instrument,It's a sitar guitar hybrid based on a popular East Indian instrument called the Mohan Veena ! Some blues musicians here in the us have recently started playing these! I want one!
