The Shins record new "up-tempo" album with new lineup

The Shins are making their fourth album, but with two different members from the original group. Frontman James Mercer has replaced keyboardist Marty Crandall and drummer Jesse Sandoval, who have been with the band from the start, with Fruit Bats bassist Ron Lewis and Modest Mouse drummer Joe Plummer. He says it's an aesthetic decision and that he needed other musicians to deliver the up-tempo sound he wants for the new record. The album won't be out for a while, but Mercer says he's already got 30 songs written, all of which move away from the band's signature melancholy sound.

    • Love the Shins. Hopefully the new album will be good. Wincing the Night Away was good, but not Chutes Too Narrow good. I'm seeing them on Sunday in Hollywood, and writing a review as well as taking some photos. I'll post on Monday.

    • I love The Shins and Modest Mouse. I'm excited to hear the product of this merger. =]

Does anyone know if Modest Mouse is just taking a hiatus, or if they split up because of this...?

    • I'm a loyal fan of their original sound, but anyone who's heard the alternate version of "Split Needles" knows they can rock the up-beat.

    • hmmmm....hope that works out. i too am a fan of their melancholy sound that they claim to be abandoning. Maybe they just think they are, but since they are so innately melancholy, perhaps they won't be able to escape it? one can only hope...

    • i love The Shins FOR their "melancholy sound." I admire them for trying to step out of their box instead of getting caught in the genre rut. But time will tell.

Oooh-oh-oh-ohohohohoh-uhhuhhuhuhhhoo. (do you see what i did there?)
