Sonic Youth not a fan of Radiohead marketing model

Kim Gordon, bassist and singer of Sonic Youth, recently spoke out against Radiohead's pay what you want model of record distribution. Radiohead released In Rainbows on their own through their own website and had customers pay what they felt was appropriate and cut out the middleman. Many critics have found this idea to be revolutionary and a step towards new distribution methods. Kim Gordon believes that this set a standard for other bands who do not sell as many records as Radiohead and have no chance of successfully carrying out this model. She believes this method has fans losing faith in other bands who can't give their albums out for next to nothing.

Is Radiohead setting a poor standard for up and coming bands or is it truly a step in a new direction, revolutionizing the distribution of modern music?

    • sounds like sour grapes to me.

i made a commitment a couple of years ago to pay for any media I wish to posses. I have, for the most part, stuck to this. I'm not in the poor house and I have all the music and movies I really care about. I don't care if other people pirate, I suppose. I just have an ethical streak lately.

I think Radiohead's decision to go with the "pay what you wish" model is fine. Any impact any other band imagines this has on them seems strictly imaginary.

      Well not all people.

I've purchased full price a few good music CDs.

      Problem is finding good music.

I mean there is lots of acceptable stuff I can listen to out there but VERY LITTLE that I think "man I want to hear that right now."

This band for instance doesn't really interest me, I was just chuckling over them bashing Radiohead for not being douchebags.

    • She doesn't think fans can think for themselves. Just because Radiohead did it doesn't mean that everyone else is expected to do it. By making this statement, she's underminding herself and her band.

Records are going for 10 dollars nowadays anyway.
If your band can't set up this model, I don't think fans will care.

Is Sonic Youth on tour this summer, because it sounds like she's just letting people know that they're still alive. If so, she could have done it in a different way.
