Molecular Gastronomy for the Ears… well sorta

robotanists
As former music school nerds, arranging has always been a passion of ours, and aside from our original music (as ROBOTANISTS) reworking the songs of others is a perfect outlet for the process we love. We’ll take a song and re-imagine the harmony, form, tempo, melody and words, and completely change the feel or meaning. We essentially deconstruct songs, and then put them back together without regard for the original work. The resulting work can go in a million directions, sometimes still upholding the essence of the original, and sometimes unrecognizable.

Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is,” was one of the first covers we ever did. And while on first listen it might not seem so different from the original, it was a labor of love and once it was recorded we realized we had to do more… so we’re actually in the studio right now working on a covers record, called “Shapes and Variations,” that will include songs by Lykke Li, Bryan Adams, The Black Keys, The Zutons and a few more.

The name of the album is taken from a quote by early 20th century Austrian scientist, Erwin Schrodinger, who said “What we observe as material bodies and forces are nothing but shapes and variations in the structure of space.” Which is a truth that’s pretty analogous to the world of music, and what we strive to exhibit through the covers we arrange.

We hope you’ll enjoy!
