If Michael Jackson took seriously the title of the song, "Free to be You and Me" -- which was also the title of a Marlo Thomas TV special -- he would probably still be alive today and in much better health, both physically and psychologically.
The "King of Pop" would also have avoided the tabloid controversies and legal nightmares that he went through in his latter years, if he had had the courage to do 25 years ago what I did 30 years ago -- come out of the closet.
That fact that Jackson died just two days before Gay Pride weekend (this year celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising) isn't lost on me.
I know that this will not please many of Michael Jackson's fans, but the time is long overdue for it to be said: Michael Jackson cut his life needlessly short by staying in the closet all those years and by going to great lengths to deny to himself and to the world what he truly was -- even when it became painfully obvious in his "Bad" video that Jackson was not and would never be a badass macho straight dude.
If there was anyone could have made peace with himself by coming out, Michael Jackson was definitely one such person, as far as I'm concerned.
