Share your Michael Jackson moment

I'm thinking about this quote from Ann Powers in the LA Times (http://bit.ly/EM2Ob): "Baby boomers have "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Pet Sounds," but for subsequent generations "Thriller" remains pop's ultimate artistic endeavor."
We'd love to hear directly from you, our community at Current.com, what your Michael Jackson moment to remember is -- the first of his songs you heard, a cover performance you saw, a video that made you want to pick up a camera and create your own movies.
You can twitter us at @current_music, leave a comment here or record a webcam. (Other folks at Current TV are working on some pieces for tonight's news and for tomorrow, too.)

This last week was a very hard one for me! Not only did Ed McMan,Ferrah Fawcett,Michael Jackson & Billy Mays all die,but my grandpa did as well! So this month has been a very sad one & I'll likely be crying for a long long time!

I've always loved his music... but what was really surprising to me was when, in the summer before seventh grade or so, I picked up "The Ryan White" story thinking it was part of the summer reading list for school. The book is a memoir about a kid, Ryan White, who grew up in the early seventies as a hemophiliac and eventually contracted AIDS through the hemoglobin supplements he took. The kid talked about how he eventually became the face for the AIDS awareness campaign in the 80's, and, why this is relevant, the myriad of celebrity encounters he's had throughout his journey. Michael Jackson apparently invited his entire family over to his Neverland ranch and even gave him his own mustang! Ryan could not stop gushing about how nice and sincere Michael was to him... and I was reading this at the same time MJ was being harassed with pedophilia charges. The entire affair was completely eye opening to me, that even though I could be surrounded by people--my own family, no less--who were so hateful and negative, I could have my own opinion and my own sources. Even if that source was a little known relic from the 90's.
Haha, I know it sounds dumb now, but for a 7th grader it was a pretty astounding feeling.
The wikipedia entry on Ryan says that MJ dedicated the song, "Gone Too Soon" from his album Dangerous to him, showed up at his funeral along with over 1499 other people, and the mustang was red.
I love you Michael Jackson.

My first memory of Michael Jackson is sitting at home with a walkman at the age of three. A Jackson 5 tape was my first ever cassette; I just remember playing "I Wanna Be Where You Are" over and over, and it still remains one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs of all time. The first time I saw him dance was during a video marathon on VH1 that I watched around the age of five. I was instantly hooked and immediately started trying to imitate his moves, especially the three-foot lean from "Smooth Criminal" and the Moonwalk. I'm still reeling from his death and I will miss him terribly. But, all I have to do is put on my iPod and listen and dance to some of his music, and it'll be as if he never left. He may be dead, but his music is here to stay forever, and I'm sure he wouldn't want it any other way. My heart goes out to the Jackson family and all who were close to him.

I think Michael Jackson is the artist that Billions of people grew up listening to! I am no exception to that at all!!! I love his music! Just last year I worked at a place that would play Michael Jackson songs every Friday ! His music just cheered up everyone around the work place & helped the work crew work better! On the days we had Michael Jackson playing we noticed we were breaking past production records! That was always great! As a young kid I used to dance around to Thriller every Halloween ! & Just hours after Michael Jackson's death,my mom played "I'll Be There" by the Jackson Five! I was instantly in tears! His strange looks & often strange life could never hide the facts that he really was the king of pop & one hell of a dancer too!!! He might have coined the term King of pop for himself, but he more then lived up to that title! His death is felt world wide! If you have ever heard one of his songs, you can't help feeling sad right now! The good news in all this is the music lives on & will go in to history as being the classical pop that moved the world!

I got into Michael Jackson through my older brothers, who were both big fans. I had a cassette with Thriller on one side and Bad on the other and I listened to it non-stop, just turning it over when one side ran out.
I was about six then and a few years later I started collecting his back catalogue. I started with Off The Wall, which I didn't really like at the time (but love now) and went back through all the amazing Jackson 5 and The Jacksons stuff. Dangerous was the last album I bought of his and after that I grew out of being such a massive fanboy. I think 'Heal The World' ruined that album for me. It was around that time that all the rumours and court cases started up, and then Britpop came along so I ended up listening to that kind of music more and forgetting about his stuff.
Remember the montage of clips / mini-doc at the beginning of the Moonwalker film? I used to absolutely love that (it's much better than the film itself) and a friend at school and I used to be able to act the entire thing out in sequence, cracking up every time when he does that really cheesy "leg lift" move in the "Rock With You" clip.

I grew up in the family that MIchael Jackson was inspiration to each one of us. For me to become who Iam, the life of MIchael Jackson was one of the few that pushed me not to stop and be able to achive my dreams. The passion he has for music was a reason why I was able to dream and climb higher to catch my dreams.
MIchael Jackon you will be remembered forever. - 3 years ago

My brother and I would do the Michael Jackson moves all the time when we were kids and I remember when one of his videos premiered and the whole family gathered around the TV to watch it. It just seems like I'm gonaa wake up tomorrow and they say that MJ came out of a coma. You know? It just seems so unreal. I also remember seeing "Moonwalker" for the first time and that's when Smooth Criminal became my favorite song. I still want one of those black and white fedoras.
Michael Jackson will never die as long as there are kids trying to moonwalk in the living room.

I was 10, heard this song, and danced the summer away to it. Ever since, Michael Jackson has touched my life with his music.

Every pop song I ever fall in love with (and there are many) will be measured against my love for Billie Jean, which I truly believe is the best pop song ever written/recorded/performed.

Michael Jackson was such a big part of my family, we are all super fans, from my parents watching The Jackson 5, growing up with their music in Mexico, to my brothers and sister and myself growing up with Michael Jackson the solo artist in the 80s and early 90s, even through the controversy in his life, we never stopped admiring his artistic career. There are so many stories my immediate family has relating to Michael Jackson music and his cultural influence, the clothes, dancing, singing! His music means nothing but joy to me and my family. Rest in Peace.
