That is a staggering amount of cash for one's funeral. Hopefully fans will contribute more money to this because California is already strapped for cash.

If it was the state of California paying, that would be utterly ridiculous and I would be thanking God I only live here and don't pay taxes here yet.
But if its the city of LA, that's totally their call. Its not the IOU's or the state's money. LA can spend their money how they want.
I still think its stupid, but I'll leave the decision up to the city budget managers. I'm sure they've got more insight into the matter than I do.

I live on the East Coast, but clearly you're a little envious of California/nians.

I'm just curious. Nearly every American has their funeral paid for either by their estate or by their family. Why isn't that the case here?
I know Michael was on tougher times, but lets not live under the delusion that his estate could not have afforded him a $1.4m send off. I have a whole lot of trouble buying that.

Read a book. The City of Los Angeles is responsible for the money....not the State of California. The planning, preparation, and precise execution of the memorial was safer and more cost effective than the melee or utter pandaemonium that could have ensued. Seems like folks just want to find something to argue about. Let's argue about something important, like why the NFL won't allow its players to tweet during games.

The city should've just issued itself one of those ingenious I.o.u. slips.

If they did not have the money, they could not have possibly wasted it. Semantics.

And how many millions did Michael Jackson generated for the city of L.A throughout the last 20 years?

Not wasted at all. Michael Jackson has a message to Heal The World. Some of us understand that message and some don't. I wish they would go ahead with the world tour with other artists - a tribute to Michael. His message of healing the world needs to be paid attention to more than ever. I'd much rather heal the world then have WWIII. They could reschedule the first few concerts (to allow time for the new artists to practice), and continue with the rest of the world tour when everyone was ready. Maybe LA could be reimbursed then and it would help pay off his bills. Some of us dream big. Michael was one of those people.

I agree this state waste everything it has mostly money and its natural resources.
There was a time when Cali was the progressive state, #1 in education, clean, and it seemed like paradise. The kind of place that gave a feeling to movies like "endless summer". I want to live in that california. What happened? - 2 years ago

I hate living in this State when I see that we spend this amount of money on someone who is... fill in the blank. The point is.. what a WASTE.
This disturbs me. There is no other way to explain how this makes me feel.

Wow. Bad news for LA. Apparently LA's money woes were so bad that Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who was expected to throw his hat in the ring for Governor, declined to. All so he could stay home in the Southland and figure out the budget!
