"I have often wondered what it is about music that elicits such emotions. Philosophers and biologists have asked the question for centuries, noting that humans are universally drawn to music. It consoles us when we are sad, pumps us up in happier times and bonds us to others, even though listening to an iPod or singing “Happy Birthday” does not seem necessary for survival or reproduction.

Emerging evidence also indicates that music brings out predictable responses across cultures and among people of widely varying musical or cognitive abilities. Even newborn infants and people who cannot discern pitch enjoy music’s emotional effect. “Certainly music seems to be the most direct form of emotional communication,” opines renowned neurologist Oliver Sacks of Columbia University, author of the recent book Musicophilia (Knopf, 2007). “It really seems to be as important a part of human life and communication as language and gesture.”

* Some scientists conclude that music’s influence over us may be a chance event, arising from its ability to hijack brain systems built for other purposes such as language, emotion and movement.
* Music seems to offer a novel method of communication rooted in emotions rather than in meaning. Research shows that what we feel when we hear a piece of music is remarkably similar to what everybody else in the room is experiencing.
* Songs facilitate emotional bonding and even physical interactions such as marching or dancing together and thus may help cement ties that underlie the formation of human societies. In addition, tunes may work to our benefit on an individual level, manipulating mood and even human physiology more effectively than words can."

MUCH more at link! Why is music important to you? Do you think it's important for society and the human race?

    • For me, music is the layers of sound and the overall atmosphere that it creates over time. Music is not measured in minutes or album length, but the duration of music without pause, examples would be a classical symphony, or a DJ set of some form of electronic music. I am not big on lyrical based songs as I feel that it switches the listening focus from the entire environment, to focusing on just one element from the sound scape. Another example would be to listen to one bird or animal, versus all sounds from the surrounding environment. By focusing on the entire sound scape, for me, my mind is completely present without thought. This I find in non-lyrical music, and has been, for a very long time a mechanism to train my mind to be always focused on listening which over time stops the inner dialog completely, Recently, I heard that the focusing on sound is a zen technique in meditation, but I wouldn't know for sure. All I do know is, listening to the entire sound scape has allowed me, for the most part, to have a mind that is in constant state of meditation.

    • this is an awesome article!
i was just thinking about this the other day.
i played the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for my 1.5-yr-old nephew and he started headbanging like whoa!

it's one thing when he mimics me dancing, but i was just fascinated to see this person, still new to the world, grasping the concept of dancing whenever he hears music.

and this is everyone and almost everything living thing since the beginning of time, which makes it even more incredible! that's why i found it so STUPID when Anastasia*sp* said she wasn't "moved by music."
      weirdo.

      thanks for this, great read!

    • This is why music has been filed down to the dry experience that it has over the years. Big corporations have figured out the myth of mind control and made it real by making sure music remains a marketing tool and not some free and open market for listener and musicians.

From the link, I thought this site would be good and funny, but after watching several of the videos (well, actually, it's apparent from watching just one), I can easily conclude that Eman Laerton is clearly batshit crazy.

Is this for REAL, or it is supposed to be satirical? This is either an atheist with an agenda for a Christian with an agenda. Either way, a total prick and a loser. :x

    • Music connects with something deep within the human mind, for me personally & I am sure for a lot of other people,I can't live without it! I have to have at LEAST some sound around me at all times or I have all sorts of problems! There are stories about people who used music to bring about storms & various other stuff & I wouldn't doubt one bit if those stories were true!!! Music is magic! There are some real powers in the effects of music! Though humans do know some of these effects on us,we might never know them all! If you taken any sort of science classes before, you might have heard that everything we know contains vibration & music is of course made up of vibration,so therefore in all truth, life is music! We could not exist without these small natural vibrations & These vibrations from music, are simply reacting with the vibrations in nature which, simply put, react with our brain waves thus leading to some real attachment to the sounds we hear! I feel it is important to listen to many types of music,so your brain gets a chance to react to several types of vibrations,& you will in time learn much about music & culture in doing so! :)

    • Music is therapy to me, writing it, singing it, playing it. There have been times when I didn't know how I was going to be able to wake up the next day because I didn't think I was going to be able to get out of bed, so I took those emotions and and sang it out to may favorite tunes. Music has saved my life more than once!

    • To be honest, music has been *responsible* for some of the roughest times of my life. I'd probably be happier without it. :x

Thankfully, now I know better than to listen to depressing music. That's why I like Western classical music - it generally makes me feel happy rather than depressed. Seeing as I'm a health-minded kind of guy, this makes more sense to me.

Bach = musical equivalent of a beautiful sunrise or a hearty breakfast

    • I always have an incredibly difficult time responding to posts about music. Why? Because music has absolutely been the biggest part of my post-child life. Believe it or not, I actually read this article about an hour ago, tried to come up with something to say, and yet was left speechless. Summing up how I feel about music is comparable to coming up with a wedding vow on the spot.

      That said:

      1. I can't really explain what makes music so important to me. I used to think I listened to music in order to gain wisdom, but now, after having listened to just about every basic genre and subgenre of music out there (literally...I don't use hyperbole), and nothing sounds truly new to me anymore, I still find myself eager to listen to more music. I used to think I wrote music in order to communicate with people, but my music has never really been listened to by very many people (not even my immediate family), and yet I still have continued to write music, even when I'm its only audience. Ditto for performing music w/ instruments.

      2. Honestly? It's hard to say. Part of me wants to say that music tames cruelty and calms anger, but we all know how beautiful music - whether it be Wagner's operas or Linkin Park's ballads - has been enjoyed by recklessly violent, bitter individuals. A Clockwork Orange even incorporated this theme with Alex's fondness for Beethoven's choral symphony, in conjunction with his fondness for violence. Even on YouTube, I've seen many people leave nasty, hateful, racist, and/or nationalistic comments, only to check out their profiles and see Eric Clapton or Chinese pop.

Music is quite an intangible entity. It's hard to make definitive statements about music.

    • "I have no pleasure in any man who despises music. It is no invention of ours: it is a gift of God. I place it next to theology. Satan hates music: he knows how it drives the evil spirit out of us." -Martin Luther

No matter how much you notice it music plays a gigantic part in your life.

    • Music is a universal language that all mamals can respond to. An emotional language that is understood at much deeper levels than the brain. Real music appeals directly to the soul itself. The Muse was said to be a God in Greek culture. Great music inspires and makes people enthusiastic which are deific qualities. When I listen to my favorite themes from composers of today or 1,000 years ago, it know it must sound the same to me as it did to people then.Timeless. More evidence that it's heaven sent.

    • When I'm feelin crappy, listening to an upbeat song that I can sing along to totally changes my mood. I've always loved playing music with other people as well; being in a band is one of the best experiences you can have. I'm always amazed at the vast variety of music that's out there and continues to be made!
