Do you have bad taste in music???

Image
Jerrigity
Over the last decade, music lovers seems to have been divided in to two very simple groups. Those who feel they listen to good music and those who feel like they listen to good music. So would you consider your taste good? Are you aware of your guilty pleasures when it comes to what you like? Is there any such thing as bad music?

Eman Laerton is so passionate about bad music, that he has taken his beliefs to the streets. He gets crowds roused up by questioning why they are at the concert they are at.

Do you agree with what Laerton is saying or does he seem to have an agenda of his own?

    • Music is 90% marketing. It's been that way at least since the 18th century when Benjamin Franklin marketed his paris glass harmonica concerts as being "a tone so pure it would drive men mad"

    • There is a small handful of great composers in human history. Most of which lived in the era of classical composition. Now, whether it be country to rap to pop to techno to whatever, most of today's "music" consist of repetitive rhythms and choruses. That can't be good. But I do know a style that is absolutely bad. That is the style of Arnold Schoenberg, Henry Cowell, Alban Berg, Anton Webern, Hanns Eisler, John Cage, Lou Harrison, Earl Kim. It seems these guys were intent in destroying real creativity in man's ability to compose beautiful music. Their style can be describable as the soundtrack of a bad horror film.

    • Musical sensibility is subjective, but it also tends to communicate something about the listener somehow as a cultural marker, from their social background to their personality type, and even their level of intellectual curiosity.

    • I already addressed this on the "Why Music Moves Us" article, but I may as well repeat:

Laerton is clearly either a "Westboro Baptist Church member" or a "Sacha Baron Cohen". He's either a crazy ideologue or a trolling prick.

The funny thing is that he rags on music that *is* genuinely overrated, but then he cites classic rock like Jimi Hendrix and The Who as if he was different from any other typical classic rock elitist.

I wonder if he knows that there are people out there who think of the music he listens to as simplistic, overrated garbage.

Maybe he should try Toru Takemitsu on for size.

    • While there is truly some horrible music that could be categorized as "bad". Taste in music is subjective. Everyone is entitled to their likes and dislikes. If he is saying that what he likes is better than someones else music choice based on superficial reasons. Then he doesn't have a valid argument. If he is saying music bad just because it's on the radio or TV then I only partly agree. While I don't like most stuff on the radio there are good songs. Seems like he is of the mindset that if it's popular then it must suck.
